I have totally caved on the character items. Avery is obsessed with Kai Lan, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (Minnie and Daisy) and the Princesses. Yesterday was an especially rough morning (she's not feeling 100% - she has that daycare funk) and she is really missing K. So, I busted out a Minnie Mouse outfit that was given to her and let her wear it. Holy cow, she was thrilled. She even wore it to bed last night (it wasn't worth the fight to change her). I had to take it off this morning and all hell broke loose.
I surrender. I am on a hunt to find Minnie Mouse rain boots in size 8. I have been scouring Etsy for cute Minnie Mouse outfits.
Avery 1, Mommy 0.

Re: I have caved on the character
Crazy Christmas Kids!
Nice to know about the Kai-Lan stuff Cindy! Kaitlyn loves Kai-Lan.
Although her latest 'obsession' is Hannah Montana. I thought we were finally through that phase since Micaela had moved on (to the Jonas Brothers... oh so better. lol) We were set to have a Wow-wow Wubzy cake for K's birthday and then on Friday (party on Saturday) she tells me she wants a Hannah Montana cake. Good thing I wasn't doing anything elaborate!
I'll keep my eyes open and let ya know if I see/find anything Harmony!
ETA: My mom got K several Minnie Mouse outfits at Walmart... Along with Pajama's too. So ya might want to check there.
I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one who's caved. I really really thought we could keep our house a Disney free zone. I was super naive. The princesses are taking over!!! It's kind of amusing to anticipate the next obsession but I'm thinking Hannah Montana could be next once preschool starts.
Hey, if it helps you get her out the door then I think YOU are the winner.
Hey, anything goes when the daddy is out of town. That's the rule in our house.
Dora rules this house. Thankfully, we don't have too many clothes. Simply because we are a garage sale shoppin' family and she doesn't often go with me!
What is Kai-Lan?
Yes, one of her birthday presents is a Kai Lan Magnadoodle.
M&M - Kai Lan is a cartoon character on Disney (Ni Hao, Kai Lan) who is Chinese. It is a cute show.

Kai Lan is the little girl from the Ni Hao Kai Lan cartoon on Noggin. https://www.nickjr.com/shows/ni-hao-kai-lan/index.jhtml
She makes Eloise "super happy!" And now my 2yo says hello in Chinese as well as Spanish.
We don't have any character clothes yet, but E has a Dora doll and some other stuff with her on it that she loves. But if you're in the market for a Dora doll, please be careful!!! The one we got is not wearing her backpack and her lack of a backpack is discussed in my house every.single.day. We finally told her that Boots has Dora's backpack and he's at home taking a nap.
Yeah trying to keep your house princess free zone is pretty much impossible. Plus Avery is super cute with her princess slippers, so I can't imagine how adorable she looks in minnie mouse!
My DH loathes anything having to do with a princess so we have been trying to hold out as well, it's not working! I get great enjoyment from Ellarie running around telling DH she is a "true princess!"
Chad got Kaitlyn that Magnadoodle for her birthday, she LOVES it and takes it everywhere. The only thing that sucks for her, is that it comes with lil patterns of the characters, but she can't stay on the lines (even though they are indented) enough for them to ever come out right, but she has fun with it anyway. lol
this made me do some serious LOLing

Reagan is not really into the princess' yet. I'm not sure she has seen anything with them. She is a huge fan though of Micky's Clubhouse, Kai Lan, Dora, Diego, Handy Manny...............tv much? Oh and now she is learning the Sesame Street characters but that has a lot to do with her diapers. This is not to leave out the Imagination Movers though they are not a cartoon but we do dance with them daily..............
I can't wait for MDO next month so I can feel like she gets something other then tv while we are working!
Crazy Christmas Kids!
I blame my Mom for the Princesses. She had Avery for about a week and was pushing potty training. She showed her a princess pull-up and now that is all.she.wants.to.wear.

ahhhh! Thanks, ladies. We do not have cable (fortunately? unfortunately?) so I'm lost on some of the characters.
The lack of Dora backpack is cracking me up. She wears that thing even in her fancy dresses. How dare they make a doll without one?!
so far we're only into sesame street or character coloring books. but it's only a matter of time. we kept our lives dora free but she's seen it at the gym. so far no character clothes, except a pj set. but she's still picky about what she wears. we have fits on some days.
and i love the imagination movers! their music rocks. plus they're based in nola.
my friend is supposed to get us on set if we can cooridnate our visit with filming, but i think i'm more excited then Addie.
oh yeah...i know someone who made this. might be too fancy though. check etsy or some minnie mouse bows, they have really cute ones.
We don't have cable either so I have no idea who any of these characters are. If it's not on PBS Orion hasn't seen it, hence his love for Elmo.
It happens. My brother started with the Spider Man ball cap - it became impossible to separate my son from it for weeks. He even slept in it.
The trip to Disney was, of course, heavy on character item aquisition.
With girls, the whole princess thing is probably impossible to avoid. Even if you dialed back the marketing juggernaut it has become to a 1970s setting, little girls still love to be princesses - even when the idea comes from books not the movies.
...and it brings them such joy.
There is a Disney outlet store near Cypress. I would visit alone if you want to curb the direct marketing to your little one.
We have surprisingly avoided the princess-addiction, despite my sister's constant gift giving of EVERYTHING princess-y!
I actually just bought K some Disney princess books so she'd know who they were when we go in Oct.
Hey, in my mind, Minnie Mouse is about the most innocuous of the character clothes. At least Minnie's got fashion sense.
Although we buy *things* with characters on them--Sam has a lot of Cars/Lightnin' McQueen stuff--we have only one item of clothing with a character on it. My cousin bought Sam a Mater shirt for his 3rd birthday, because he was obsessed at the time.
But I do see Hannah beginning to like more girly stuff lately. Having a boy first, I actually haven't exposed her to girly stuff very much, but it's not on purpose. It's just because I'm used to buying non-girly stuff.
Here's a story: They have this TV station here that plays mostly Australian or Singaporean kids' shows. But there are a few of the "preteen" Nickelodeon shows that they have on as well, including iCarly, Secret Life of Zach and Cody, and Hannah Montana. Yes, high quality programming. The kids have never watched them, though. Anyway, there is this Hannah Montana commercial that plays several times a day, and she's singing this one particular song. The other day, Sam was playing in his room and I heard him singing the song to himself. It frightened me.
Addie adores Sid the Science Kid on PBS. She sings the songs all day long.
Elena's obsession with princesses started innocuously enough -- she liked the girls in pretty dresses. remember, she insists on wearing dresses every day. Even then I didn't do Disney princesses but made her her own non-character princess outfit, etc.
BUT she saw the Disney princesses everywhere. they really are EVERYWHERE.
I do buy her Disney princess pajamas, and plenty of toys, but I'm still holding out on shirts. In fact, it is being written on her invitations to please not give us Princess t-shirts. I just don't want to see them everyday.
6-yr-old Elena and 4-yr-old Julia.
My Blog! All about my girls and quilting
we have no themed clothing other than a Cars"Mater" T-shirt that I made for her a while back (as he is her favorite person in the disney line of characters). but we have become fast fans of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and she adores a single yard of little mermaid fabric I bought her. and she has a few of the character stuffed animals (100 dalmations, mulan dragon, remy and emile from ratatouille, and I think that's it) but I've managed to stay away from the princesses. she does love them, but doesn't own any princess stuffs. I'm gonna keep it that way as much as I can.
but the mickey stuff. I can deal with that.
