Pregnant after a Loss

For those who exercise??

I used to be an avid runner (I would run 5-7 miles 3x/week)...after I got my first BFP around Christmas last year...I quit...and then after the miscarriage at the end of January, I was depressed and didn't start back up either.

Anyway, I've been out of running for a while, but would really like to start some kind of cardio routine (now that my energy is returning). What is everybody currently doing for exercise routines?  I'm a little nervous about running again b/c it's been so long..what do you think?  Thanks!!

Re: For those who exercise??

  • I jogged in the grocery store when I forgot something and I can't say it was comfortable feeling my belly bounce like that!

I walk for an hour every day (2-3 miles depending on my pace), have a pilates video, and lift 5lb weights just to keep my arms in shape. I was doing  an intense gym class-Body Pump-right up to my BFP, but between my exhaustion and feeling nervous about too much exercise, despite what my dr. said, I stopped. I don't think I could go back to it now. Walking is good enough for me.

Do whatever feels most comfortable for you, but don't over do it.

  • I was a runner too and stopped when I got this BFP.  I just can't bring myself to run during this pg but I do not have a good reason for it.  I have been walking and using the eliptical machine instead and then every couple days I do light hand weights.  Right now I am going to see about switching to pre natal yoga a few days too to make room for this baby and get some good stretching in.
  • I wish I loved running - LOL!! I hate to run, but like to walk so I've been walking pretty much 6 or 7 days a week the whole time. I walk faster than some people run, so it's not like a little stroll - I do actually get cardio from it. I was walking an hour a day before I got pg and up until about 6 weeks ago, then I cut it to 40 minutes because with the heat and humidity it was getting harder on me. Sometimes I try to go for a short 20 minute walk at night too, so I still occassionally get my 60 minutes a day in - but usually it's just 40. I think it has helped me a LOT and is a big reason why I'm only up 8 1/2 pounds total so far. I also do prenatal yoga once a week, but that isn't much of a workout - more relaxing and stretching.
  • I continued Step Aerobics (which was I doing before my BFP) until 22 weeks.  Hip pain caused me to call it quits.  I was walking for a couple of weeks but wanted more resistance so I started water walking this summer and I LOVE it.  Some resistance, some arm work, and the stress relief of the water.  I highly recommend it.

Hmm..sounds interesting, I've never heard of water walking before.  Is this something you do on your own or through a gym membership?

  • If I were you I wouldnt pick running back up now. maybe you can after the baby is born.

I just walk now, do light weights, and I am going to do prenatal yoga.I actually got certified to teach bodypump the weekend before we concieved So now when I teach it I cut the weight down alot.  I also teach muscle classes and again I just cut back on the weight. I dont lift anymore that 10 lbs weights.

I gave up teaching spinning when I found out I was pregnant because I just thought it was way to much. My heart rate would get up way to fast. Plus for my other two pregnancies I still did spinning. I just have that in the back of my mind.

you could do low impact aerobics, the ellipical, swimming is awesome, walk on treadmill or outside and definately do prenatal yoga. it is supposed to be great for you and baby.

remember to listen to your body. do what you can do. try not to elevate your heartrate. they say you should be able to talk. do not get it high that you cant tallk. they say the base line is 140 bpm. I am scared so I try not to go above that and I use how I feel. if I get winded I slow down.

    good luck and stay healthy.

  • Thanks everyone I appreciate the advice.  I think I'll start with some brisk walking or maybe some bike riding in the neighborhood and see how that goes.  Also, there is a place by me that offers pre-natal yoga, so maybe I'll check that out as well.  Thanks again!

  • I have also always been an avid runner and stopped running when I got my BFP.  I used to run 3 or 4 miles 4 times a week at least but stopped when I got my BFP.  I ran with my first preg that ended in m/c and my dr. actually straight up told me no running this time.  I think I had a tendency to not know how to slow myself down and run easy rather than the way I always used to run.  So i was ok with stopping.  I now walk with my dog several miles at the park a couple times a week and I also walk on the treadmill at the gym and use the stationary bikes.... oh and lift.  It's not the same as running if you were a runner though.  I have to say of all the sacrifices you make while preg I miss running the most... more than alcohol, more than caffiene, more than sushi.  I hate when someone runs by me in the park on a nice day... drives me nuts.

  • I am normally a big runner too.  I do several half marathons a year usually.  I kind of did the same thing with my m/c and getting pg again with running.  I've been mainly walking, with some swimming thrown in.  Earlier in my pg I would do the elliptical and stationary bike here and there, but now I walk the hills in my neighborhood.  I am still feeling really good, and I think it helps me sleep better, etc.  I was also a bit paranoid about running while pg, so rather than worry I just didn't do it!

Yeah..I definitely miss it too!  But, I'm looking forward to when LO gets here and I can get a jogger stroller and get out there again!

  • Me too, I used to run marathons and half marathons but quit cold turkey at my first BFP in December and then was too freaked out to start again after miscarriage and second BFP.

I do the elliptical every day now and I love it.  It gives me the feeling of getting a good workout without all the bouncing and high impact.  Going for walks outside is good for that craving for the open road, I've found.

    Good luck!

I ran about two blocks on one of my walks about a month ago and man, running with that extra weight in front is just not pleasant!

I walk, do light weights and exercises like squats, lunges, leg lifts, etc., and I do yoga here and there. I love yoga, but I haven't found a prenatal yoga DVD that's challenging enough, but the yoga DVDs I used to do are too much now - so I sort of just do my own thing when I have the chance.

I think I would also feel uncomfortable about starting up running again after your long hiatus - I used to run, and continued at a lesser pace in my first pregnancy. I had my miscarriage, D&C, and then got pregnant not long after I was cleared to start exercising again. I didn't feel right starting up running again after that long break. I just walk and do light weights. I think I'm going to start swimming more, too.

On my own.  Our outdoor municiple pools have lap swim hours and I go then and just walk laps instead of swim laps.
