For those using a cradle...

My father-in-law built a gorgeous cradle for us and they of course purchased all the bedding. The bed set came with a small bumper, its only about 3 inches high.

Do you think its necessary to use a bumper at first? I realize once he's a little older and moving around we'll want to use it but at first i don't think its neccesary.

I have a breathable bumper for the crib but he won't be in his crib for at least the first month or so.

We aren't putting a bumper in the cradle -- but we did get one for the crib. Sometimes babies don't even like being in a cradle (from what I've been told by friends) so it was just something we skipped...don't think she'll need it.

We didn't use one with DD in the cradle (or crib) and she was fine. Also, if used as per manufacturer's instructions, a crib bumper shouldn't be used once LO is moving around.

I'm using the cradle that my dad made for me as a baby. I did not buy any bedding for it since she won't be in there for very long. I'm just going to put a quilt down in the bottom of it to add the slightest bit of padding.

Just another little suggestion: If the craddle mattress is small you can make a sheet that fits over it like a pillow case would (or even use a pillow case), that way in the middle of the night if there is a leak in the diaper or it gets dirty somehow, you can just flip it over and worry about changing the sheet in the morning...... Works awesome:)
