How many towels/washcloths do I need?

I think the little hoodie towels are adorable, but do you really need certain towels for baby? We have SO MANY regular towels, so should I register for "baby" towels or just wait and see if people pick little cute ones out on their own? What about washcloths? We don't have nearly as many of those... TIA!

Re: How many towels/washcloths do I need?

  • I use a ton of washclothes -- two per bath when I am just giving DD a sponge bath. I also use the washclothes to wash her mouth and face off after she eats. I throw them in the hamper or wash after each use. I think I probably have 15+ wash clothes. As for the towels, I have two of the cute hooded ones and figure if they aren't clean I can easily use a regular small towel.

  • Skip the hoodie towels for now they are great but to be honest I rarely if ever use them for DS.  As he gets bigger though I may buy one of the kid sized ones but the infant ones in my experience have been a waste of money.

    Use a regular towel.

I bought a 6 pack of baby washcloths, that has been enough for us.

  • I like the hooded baby towel because they are soft and just the right size.  We have 5 of them.  I have a few that are really thin and the other ones are thicker and bigger..dd will be able to use them for quite awhile.  As for washcloths I think we have 10-12 little baby ones (Gerber brand I think).  I go through those quickly and wash them a lot!  They are great for cleaning her hands and face off throughout the day.

I registered for the towels and washcloths.  You could get by just fine using your own towels  and washcloths if you really want but I'd register for a few baby ones just to see if you like them.

  • I also use a ton of washcloths, sometimes he spills a lot when he eats so I place one over the bib (DH makes fun of me) but otherwise his clothes get a little wet.

  • I think I registered for 2 hooded towels...and received at least 8 of them.  So I think people pick little cute ones on their own.  Personally I think the regular towels are more absorbent and bigger although we used the baby towels a lot at first.

Washcloths--I use at least one per bath.  Two during the first sponge bath days.  I also had a stack on the changing table that I used to cover DS during diaper changes to keep him from peeing all over the place.

  • We have a spitter upper, so we easily have 50 washclothes and use them all.  Some for bathing, some for wiping her spit off, a couple in the diaper bag, at least three a day to clean her face after a meal...

We like the hodded towels but they aren't a necessity.  I wouldn't bother to register for them, them seem like something people like buying.

Also, there are often lots and lots of them for 49 cents at Goodwill (I think because they don't get used as much as they get purchased) and most look like they've never been used.

  • I probably do not know what I'm talking about but we've really stocked up on the baby washcloths.  It seems every Mom I know has them everywhere -- in her purse/diaper bag, by the changing table, with the high chair, etc.  They are super cheap and really seem incredibly useful to me.  That said I only registered for a couple of sets of hooded towel/wash cloth combos and got way more at my shower.  I just went through them all, picked out the nicest ones and returned the rest.  My plan is that my go-to wash cloths are going to be the cheaper ones (Dollar Store has some great ones IMO, but also Big Lots and Marshalls/Ross are good sources) -- they are not plush the way an adult wash cloth is.  I think these will be better for wiping little messes.  Additionally we are cloth diapering so I kept a lot of the cheaper, thinner wash cloths to use as cloth wipes. HTH.

  • I would say get as many washcloths as you can, it never seems like I have enough.  The hoodie towels help because when you lay them down to change them, their hair doesn't get the changing table damp. I have about 6 or 7 baby towels, but we are transitioning to regular towels now that Ella is old enough.

  • I registered for 2 hooded towels and got 15-- yes 15!  Just got another one yesterday.  I also got about 30 washcloths.

Most of the towels I got are crap imo.  They are terry on one side and just cotton knit on the other....but a few I got (the Amy Coe, Pottery Barn Kids and Carter's) are really nice and thick and those are the only ones I've used.  Right now we do laundry every day and only bathe her twice a week so we've used only 2 of the 6 or so good towels that I have but that may change as she gets a bit older and we start managing mess better meaning doing less laundry.

However I use ALL of my wash cloths.  I never expected to but they are great for cleaning up spit up and for laying on top of DD while I am nursing to catch the leak from the other boob (sorry for the TMI ; ) Our burp cloths are the thick cloth diapers which are useful as well, but I think too thick to really wipe her face of or get under her chin when she has spit up.

Also we use 2-3 washcloths just for the bath (one with soap and each of us uses one with just water to rinse her off and make it go faster)

  • I have 5 hooded towels and I really like them. DS gets really cold after his bath so we can wrap him up good since they are the right size. I also like th hood to keep his head covered since you lose body heat out of the head. I would get the good quality ones as they are thicker and better than the cheap ones. As for washclothes, I probably have about 20 and I really use them. I would also recommend a wash mitt. I use this for washing him in the tub. Since it is a mitt, it stays on your hand and you can't drop it as easily.

  • We use a ton of washcloths. ?And we also use the hooded baby towels all the time. ?They're the right thinness and the right size. ?A regular towel would probably be okay, but I'd definitely prefer using baby towels. ?
