Oldest child you know thats not PT'ed yet?

Just out of curiosity...what is the oldest age child you know thats not potty trained yet?

I ask because DH and I were at a BBQ this past weekend and a couple that was there was talking about their child who is still not PT'ed (even during the day). We were both shocked because it was way past time IMO. I will not say the age because I don't want to be *that* mom but I am curious...is this more common than I am aware of?

Re: Oldest child you know thats not PT'ed yet?

  • My co-workers son was not PT'd until 4. That's the oldest I've heard.
  • Most kids I know were between 3 and 3.5 when they were potty trained.

I know a few kids with developmental delays or medical issues that caused later potty training (5+) so I try not to judge.

  • I've known a few boys that were potty trained between 3.5 and 4 y/o.

  • A friends DD wasn't PT'd until she was 3.5 y/o and from what I understand that is quite old for a girl. It isn't uncommon for boys not to be PT'd until that age.

    ETA: DS#1 PT'd at 19mths, regressed and then retrained at 26mths. DD was PT'd by 2.5 y/o.?

  • the oldest I have known is right after 3.  We haven't pushed it with Olivia and she is 2 yr 8 mo.  We are starting this weekend though with the 3 day method....I am a little scared.

  • Well, my DS will be 4 in a month and  isn't consistent about poop.

There  were some boys in his preschool class who weren't even pee trained until 4 (DS was fine with that at 3).

I think bump babies pt early...

  • I have two good friends who didn't PT until 3.5 yrs old.  Too old IMO.

  • Mom's CLub friend said her DS wasn't until 4.

Nephew is 3.5 and has NO interest.

  • 11 yrs old but she's severely Autistic and has horrid care takers, she could be PTed (joys of social work)

non special needs, four. ?My brother was four when he was PTed. ?My mom almost had him PTed at 3 but the toliet lid fell on him and hampered that : ( ?

  • My Godfather's son was 5 YEARS OLD when they trained him. However, he was able to use the toilet but refused unless they gave him presents/toys. It was a very strange situation.
  • My cousin was 4, it was way to long.

  • Both of my friend's GIRLS were over 4 before they PT'd.  Totally a control thing for them.

  • Ok I'm so glad I'm not being too judgey about this then. The girl (yes a girl!) has no medical issues and is going to be 5 in a couple months. She still wears diapers during the day and at night. Her parents were shocked when I told them that DS was done at 2.5 years old! They said 'but he still wears pull-ups at night though right?' (he is almost 6) I said no, he was done at 2.5...all the way done. I know its a lil early for a boy, the night stuff at least but daaaamn! They were seriously shocked! I would never have said when he was trained but they asked. All the answers here seem to be pretty much the same average that I have heard of in the past too, some old enough to give the side eye and some quite young..but all in all pretty normalish.
  • My DD was 3 years, 9 months. I was ashamed of it then, but no longer am. DD had a really really strong fear that when she "let go" into the potty that she'd be losing a part of herself somehow. It took until she was old enough to both verbalize that fear AND understand our reassurances that everything would be OK.

  • Wait, so they thought a 6 year old (with no medical issues or delays) should still be wearing a pull-up? Did I read that right? Do they know any other kids?
She's crafty - and she's just my type.

Yeah you read that right lol. DH and I don't understand it either, just plain craziness...or laziness!

DS will be 3.5 next month & we just got him out of diapers this past Friday.  He's had two accidents during the day and hasn't made it through the night, so he's in pull-ups tonight.  I am 100% against forcing a child to PT.  If they aren't ready, they aren't ready.  A month ago we did a "no diaper day" and DS wasn't even phased when he had an accident & he outright refused to even sit on the potty to try.  But, two weeks ago he started asking to go, so we knew it was time & used the long weekend to focus on it.

I agree that forcing a child to PT is not a good idea, nor can it be done IMO. But 3.5 for a boy is not almost 5 for a girl.

  • My nephew was 5 for daytime PT'ing and 7 for nighttime.  His brain just simply did not recognize the sensation or urge to pee.  His pedi finally wrote a prescription for special "diapers" that had a sensor in them.  There was a unit that got plugged into the wall, also.  When the sensor in the diaper got wet, an alarm in the plug in portion rang.  They basically used the pee-alarm response to train my nephews brain that he had to pee.  Basically, he needed to build new neuro pathways to recognize that particular stimulus because it didn't happen on it's own, like it does for most people.
  • My friend's son is 3.5 and still refuses to do #2 in anything but a diaper.

My friend's daughter was close to four - she flat out refused to do it. She'd even pretend to go at preschool and wet her pants later.

  • DS didn't use the potty till he 4.  He still refuses to poop on the potty and he'll be 5 in less than 2 weeks.

I have a friend like that.  Her DS was pee trained, but would hold #2 until he got home & would ASK for the diaper to poop in.  I think he was 4.5 before he used the potty for #2.

  • IMO 5 is way too old for a Typically developing boy or girl. Kids go to kindergarden at five. If they are old enough to read they are old enough to pee/poop in the potty. Sorry but if there is no medical issue I blame this on the parents.

I'm a lil late getting back to this but....My thoughts exactly. It's just plain too old.
