Anyone get a hematoma on their c-section incision?

My incision started getting firm and looked swollen about a week ago. When I went in for my two week appt with the OB he didn't seem concerned. He told me to put a heating pad on it as often as I could to break up the built up fluid and to not be alarmed if it started leaking dark blood or fluid. As long as it isn't puss or getting red and inflamed along the incision, I shouldn't be worried...

The incision opened up last night and literally has not stopped bleeding since then! I keep changing gauze and pads and have bled through to two pairs of underwear and one pair of pants! Any one have this problem and know how long it's going to last?

  • I didn't have a c-section but I had laparascopic surgery a month ago and got a hematoma at the incision site (my belly button). My incision opened and starting bleeding out about two weeks after the surgery. The bleeding was constant for about 3 days before it started to let up. It completely stopped and closed back up after about 10 days. I still have hardness from it but the swelling is starting to go away now. HTH

ETA: my dr. said not to worry unless it is gushing red blood or started to look infected, it totally freaked me out when my incision opened but that was actually what relieved all the pressure and made me feel better

I called the on call doc today and she said that is was just the hematoma releasing the trapped blood and breaking up. But the fact that it doesn't stop bleeding is what freaks me out.

What the PP said sounds just like what my Dr told me. It's dark red blood right now and only a little inflamed where the opening is. blech. I'm so over this recovery thing...

  • I had a large hematoma. It got infected right after I left the hospital and again at 7 weeks pp and opened up. Mine drained for over a week but it was blood and pus from the infection. Continue with the heat. The more that drains the better it will feel. Watch for fever and redness or if the discharge smells. You might be able to touch lightly and see if the hard part is getting softer.
