For the foster parents out there

Did you have any clothes at your house before you received placements?

If so, how did you organize them?

Re: For the foster parents out there

  • yes - and thank god that we did.

We were getting stuff off of Freecycle and as soon as I got them, I would wash and sort.

I sorted by gender and size and of course season.  Most of the times when I got stuff, it was all around the same size, so that made it much easier.  I put everything in large plastic tubs and then taped a paper to each one with what was in it.  Some bins had multiple seasons, I just put that on the label

When Lil J came to us, he came with the clothes on his back, 10 diapers and a toy car.  Yup, that is it.

So, thank god I happen to have stuff in his size, in the current season.  And, I did not have every size for both genders, but knew that I could run to Walmart with what I had.

I still have the clothes, even the girls, hey you never know when the phone will ring.

  • A ton!!  I have a few relatives with girls so they started giving me all their clothes.  I'm SO incredibly thankful.  I have much more clothes than needed, from newborn to two years old right now.

I went and bought the big giant storage bins.  I have them labeled:

    0-3 months

    3-6 months

    6-9 months

    1 year

    2 year

Yep, I have five full bins.  As I get older hand me downs, I'm donating my outgrown sizes...like now I"m getting rid of the 0-3 and 3-6 month clothing.

I have them all stored in the garage.  I didn't want to miss out on the shopping experience of buying cute baby girl clothes.  So in lieu of that, every two months or so I go shopping in the garage, and pick out all the cute clothes for the size I need.

  • Thanks ladies!

We go to alot of garage sales, so I was wondering if it'd behoove us to start picking baby,  toddler / young childrens' clothes.  I guess that answer is YES! :)
  • Just wanted to butt in, as always, and say that I am happy to pass on to foster parents clothing as G grows out of them. We are done with preemie and those are gone but now we are working our way out of 0-3. I also right now have enfamil lipil nursettes (just a couple) that we cannot use anymore as we switched to AR and I also have a case of the large cans of ready made enfamil but I suspect those are too heavy to ship and it wouldn't be worth it - but the nursettes can be shipped easy enough. I also still have the soothie bottles, born free and the wide dr. b bottles - just a couple of each.
  • YES! We weren't going to but the weekend before we got our license (and first placement) DH went to a consignment store when visiting his parents. He bought gender specific and neutral clothes from 0-12 months. Thank goodness he did that or we would have been up a creek since we got back home on a Sunday and the next day we had a license and a baby within an hour of each other.

It just depends on the ages you have. I always went through clearance sections and picked up a few things that were just too cute and saved.  After 3 previous placements - I have um, 5-6 rubbermaid containers by their sizes. Sadly our current girls - I only had clothes to fit one of them.

  • we have a couple outfits for each gender (or gender nuetral) for approx 0-24 months.  DW didnt want to go crazy on the clothes but I'm glad we have something in the house to get us through the first couple days until we can go out and buys clothes specific to the child.  Plus, its really fun to buy/wash/put away baby clothes :)
