shelf stable milk??

I was at the grocery store and saw milk that was in a juice-box like container. It was not in the refrigerated section, just on a shelf with other juices. I looked at the ingredients and it was milk and vitamin D, that's it. Is it like powdered milk? I'm confused. I thought it might be good to get some for when we are out and about so we don't have to worry about keeping milk cold, but I'm not sure. Anyone see this/use this milk? Thanks!

Re: shelf stable milk??

  • Sometimes they sterilize it so that it doesn't have to be refridgerated. I've been looking for milk in a juice box since Adam is very particular about how he drinks his milk and I thought this would help, but I never checked the juice section!

  • Not for DD yet but with my stepson we use to bring it on vacation so they could have cereal in the hotel room.  We would transport it that way and then refrid. before serving.  I did this with soy milk for me.  I think it is the way they package it?
  • It's ultra-pasteurized. Regular liquid milk, not powdered. It is real milk and would be great to have for just in case while you're out, but a lunch bag and ice pack works just fine. ;)

  • The milk is pasteurized and sealed in such a way that it doesn't need to be refrigerated until it's opened. We haven't used it with DD, but DH and I used to pack it when we traveled to the Caribbean where it's harder to get skim milk. It's just like refrigerated milk.

It would work when you're out and about only if you don't open it until you need it, but then you'd need to refrigerate the rest immediately or else toss it. I'd suggest getting an insulated cup instead. We have Nuby insulated straw cups and a Thermos Foogo straw cup that work well. Or you could just use an insulated lunch bag and an ice pack. :)

  • That thermos fogo thing says it keeps it cold like 12 hours or something.
  • I don't understand the science of it but i love the idea.  An organic milk company (Horizon I think) sells them in juice box size which i think is awesome.  They come with the kids meals at panera too.  DD is not on whole milk yet but when she is i forsee us spending a ton on these (they are not cheap) to take out with us.  they don't need to be refrigerated and they are organic and they are in single serving sizes, what more could you want from milk?
