Does anyone share a nanny?

I am having another baby this year and am not thrilled about putting another child in DC. My sons teacher is the best and I have already spoken to her about possibly becoming our Nanny. Her one problem is that she is very attached to my son and one other little girl. I spoke with the girls mother and asked how she would feel about a nanny share. The nanny would be there for 7.5 hours and have 2 2.5 year olds and a newborn. She is super efficent and you can't ask for a nicer person to watch your kids. Does anyone have any experience with a nanny share if so can you share.

  • We did a nanny share when I first went back to work. I have some blog posts on it. Here are a few links:

In short, we loved it for DD when she was an infant, and I hope to find a similar situation when we have our next baby.

That said, I'm not sure I'd want it for DD now. She'll be 2 on Thursday, just started preschool, and I think she benefits from the larger environment, greater variety of activities, etc. than what one provider could give her at home. Ideally, when the next baby comes along, I'd like to leave DD in preschool at least during the school day (9 AM to 2 PM), and then have a nanny share for the new baby. (A nanny share, because DH does not want to spend the $$$ for a dedicated nanny.) Maybe the nanny could pick DD up at 2 PM, rather than having her go to her preschool's after care. We might even drop her down to just 3 or 4 days at preschool. But I do think she benefits from that interaction now that she's older.

  • flyer - how did you find someone to do the nanny share with? I work from home so would like to keep my daughter in house, but can't justify the extra cost to my husband - nanny share would put us at or below the cost of daycare.  I did post on craigslist and thought I found someone, but she backed out and was the only legit response to the ad ... any suggestions? TIA!
  • I am looking into a share program since I work from home as does my friend. I am due first so I am going to look for someone full-time and then share with her. I have been looknig through agencies.
  • Sam - We found our nanny share through craigslist, but I know that we REALLY lucked out. The full story is also on my blog: https://worklifeunbalanced.blogspot.com/2008/07/searching-for-child-care-part-2.html

I think craigslist is a good option, but you may have to keep at it. There are also online services geared towards matching up families interested in sharing, e.g. https://www.gonannies.com has a "DomestiShare" program.

You can also network with friends/family/neighbors. We have some friends who live around the corner from us, and they are trying for their first baby right now, so I really hope they get pregnant soon and would be interested in a nanny share once our kids are born Smile

The other child is a friend of my DC that goes to school with him now. It is not definate yet, but I hope she will be interested because my son and her daughter are so good together.

  • Yeah, if I only knew someone in the area I am moving to, that would work well!  Thanks for the encouragement about craigslist.
