rough daily schedule; you want daily communication-ie how much child eats, diaper changes, and napping; where will child sleep; what other ages of kids are at daycare; vacation/holiday policies; do you supply diapers/formula/nap supplies etc-some places will provide formula if they are on a food program; licensed or not-and for how long; who if anyone else will be near the kids-husband etc?;
this is just my short list from the top of my head.
I won't be looking at daycares, but I did work at one and these are some good ones to ask, especially if you're putting your child in at/around 6 weeks:
-What is your policy on parents visiting during the day? ?(Some parents liked to come on their lunch break just to rock their baby or see them/check up. ?If a daycare doesn't want you to do this--stay clear! ?They should encourage you to do so).
-How do you keep track of feeding/changing diapers? ?(Any reputable day care will have a set schedule/procedure that EVERYONE who works there should know).
-Ask how they handle naps, staff knowledge of SIDS guidelines, and observe these behaviors when you tour a center.?
-What training do all staff have? ?(Even though most daycares have "regular" teachers for each age group, there are often floaters who cover for lunches/absences. ?When I was first put in the baby room at my center I'd barely had any training on site, luckily I had personal experience with babies).
?Make sure they take you on a tour of the whole center, not just the baby room.
-Ask who you can contact if you think of questions after you leave.
-Ask about child/teacher ratios and when you tour the center observe to make sure these ratios are enforced. ?There are laws that set up the ratios, but oftentimes they are not enforced--I was always concerned by this.
?One of the most important things is to observe the center to make sure their words match their actions!
