NTTTCR: If I ate a shard of glass...

I broke a plate near where I was cooking spaghetti sauce, and the shards went flying everywhere.  I picked a tiny piece out of my sauce and didn't see anything else, so I assumed it was fine.  I ate my dinner, and now my throat hurts a little.  All of the sudden I am paranoid that I swallowed some of the shards and they are going to wreak havoc on my internal organs.  I can't find any information online about what I should do or if I should be concerned.  Any suggestions?  (Yes, I realize this sounds ridiculously paranoid, and I'm probably a hypochondriac but help a girl out!)

  • Oh crap! Hopefully you are just thinking you did. Sorry I can't help, I would think you would be okay, I hope so.

  • From way back in my girl scouting days and that first aid patch. . . you're supposed to eat a few pieces of bread. . .

The only reason I've remembered this for so many years is because I think of it everytime i see in a movie or hear about someone being proposed to with the ring in a glass or in food. . . I ALWAYS this what if they swallow it? Couldn't the diamond cut up their GI?  And think gosh, that girl better eat some bread.

    I know I ramble. . .

  • I think you're fine.  When I was little I ate some glass off the street (I think my mom was chatting to someone else and had looked away).  My mom called the doctor and they said that unless I appeared to be in pain, I was fine.  A little sore throat is probably nothing and might just be paranoia more than anything else.  After I do something questionable for my health, I always say to my husband "If I wake up dead, tell the doctor I ate/drank/did this."

  • I was going to suggest bread as well.

I hope you feel better and aren't concerned for too long!

I broke a lid a while ago near pot roast and wanted to eat it so badly, but DH talked me out of it. :(

  • I'm going to eat a slice of bread, even though I am sure I am just being paranoid.  Thanks for the advice ladies!!!

  • Not sure how big the shard might be, but if you start to get pain any place else (stomache, intestine, etc) call your doc. Worse comes to worse they could order an xray, most foreign bodies will show up. But that is worst case senario stuff. I hope it turns out to be nothing, but hey if you are really that concerned that's what your doc is for.

I like the advice about the bread too.

    :) Take care!

this absolutely cracked me up!  I think you're also supposed to feed bread to dogs if they eat chicken bones... something about the bread sticking to the sharp edges.
