Lying to WIC

Every time I see my OB I have to see the Early Start Specialist. She is some kind of social worker and gives me information on support groups for new moms, BFing, etc. She asked me today if I was getting WIC and I told her DH makes too much money for us to qualify. She told me she didn't qualify either but she just lied and said her DH got laid off. I feel kinda guilty about this, but it would help out. It's not like it's a government program and it's there to help us so why shouldn't I take advantage of it? I used to lie to planned parenthood to get free birth control, but I always made donations. It's kinda the same thing. What do you guys think?

Re: Lying to WIC

  • I wouldn't do it.  I'm sure it would help but there are many people out there who are less fortunate.  Besides, I wouldn't want to lie about DH getting laid off for fear that it would really come true.

WIC is a government program.  lying would be cheating the system.  don't be that girl.  for the love of God, don't be that person.

  • it would help a lot of people whether they really needed it or not.  would never lie for it.

    Nice.  Loser.

This is what is wrong with our country.  People feeling entitled to something rather than taking personal responsibility.

    Don't do it.

Oh, and it is funded by taxpayers.

  • Don't do it. I can't believe that specialist told you that.
  • Um yeah it is a government program.  either way keep your ethics in check.  Karma is a biitch.
  • OMG.  wtf.  GHETTO FABULOUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

    dont even get me started......

    btw, that's fraud.

  • Absolutely not.  There are people who need it more than you do, if you don't qualify. Aside from that, when is lying ever okay or justifyable?
  • htomeohtomeo member

With our income to number of kids ratio, DH and I would technically qualify. But as long as we can do it on our own, I refuse to use state assistance. Yeah it would help out, but I want to steer as far clear of having to have state help. If we could not do it on our own, we would not have had Willis.

For lots of moms it depends on the situation for needing the WIC. And I can totally see using it, but honestly. I  would not feel happy knowing my tax dollars would be going to someone who lied to get it.  Don't kid yourself, it is a State based program. It is still lying and cheating. I would not want to start out by setting that example as a parent.

  • Thanks girls I knew this was stupid. And this came out of the mouth of a social worker lol
  • Hell no! And, I would report the social worker for fraud.
  • I'm sure it would be helpful but don't lie about it.  Karma.

  • Of course WIC is a government program - what exactly did you think it was?

This is NOT a good idea.  Yes, formula is expensive, and everyone would like to save some green, but in no way could any of that justify fraud.  I actually hope you were kidding here.

  • What is wrong with people???  Why would you think this is okay?

this is a joke right? right?

you have GOT to be kidding. I can't even wrap my mind around this. You're going to lie to get free formula and peanut butter even though you can afford it?

Go play  in the street. Its a slap in the face to those of us that actually need the program and struggle to get by.

  • I am on WIC an no offense but I would be pissed off if somthing were to happen where I would stop getting it over sombody who could afford formula and things like yourself.

I don't even like being on WIC because I feel less proud and independent but I really have no other alternative at the time. I mean if you are willing to lie to WIC and they some way find out then you are going to have to deal with the consequences and I don't think its worth all the trouble.

    This!
  • Why don't you just not pay your taxes this year? You know, screw the IRS aka the government. Do that instead. Because, it's the same thing.

Please, think about it that way.

  • hope that social worker is ok with a trip to jail, b/c that is so illegal. free BC is waaaay different than welfare. just saying.

  • So what happens at the end of the year when you do your taxes and they see your DHs income and your Wic on your return?
  • I report people for WIC fraud.

  • There are a lot of people that need assistance, but I think it is horrible to lie to get it.  It just makes it harder for the people that actually need it to get it.

Financially, we are barely making it and some kind of assistance would be wonderful, but I would never say one of us was laid off so we could get it.

  • They don't ask for your tax return info. and they really don't even pay attention to the paperwork that you do bring. We're in need of it at this time due to the state of our economy. I forgot to bring 1 of DH's paycheck stubs and they said not to worry about it. It is really sad, but they really don't check you out when you apply for this. At least the office that I go to. One of the nurses there said that they'll have to close the office if they don't have enough people coming in to apply and that they'll lose their jobs.

That is sad. I guess they figure if people need it bad enough then they should just get it. That sign came from my friend seeing a girl he knows on WIC in a pair of real Manolo Blaniks.

when i worked in a grocery store in college- the wic worked like this (this was 7 yrs ago so it may be different now)- women came through with WIC checks- and would get things like eggs, milk, lentils, 100% fruit juice, formula, (healthy things) and then they give you the check and it zeroes out in the register.  they don't just hand you over cash.  or at least they didn't back in the day.  they don't give cash bc then people would use it for beer money.

They don't give you money. You're given vouchers (4) a month and you get cereal, eggs, milk, juice, cheese, formula, baby cereal, peanut butter/beans.

This is how is works here in AZ...I know a girl on it and she gets 6 cans of formula a month if she supplements and 9 if you only FF.  Plus the food mentioned above.  And its a ridiculous amount of things like 6 gallons of milk a month and 2 dozen eggs, she can't even go thru all of the food they give her.

The difference is you didn't know those people and you judged them. Like everyone said they could have just laid off, the car paid for, etc etc a friend driving them, borrowed from a friend.

We know this person IRL, we know she went and bought these $300 shoes cash money herself not a gift. That is the difference.

  • FIW ~ WIC is not through the Department of Human Services (aka welfare)...it is through the Department of Agriculture.  Our local WIC office encourages everyone to apply if the are eligible, otherwise they can lose their funding.  I would check out what you can deduct to see if you can get eligible.

if you have a brand new luxury vehicle you can SELL IT for a cheaper used car.  then use the difference to buy the things you need.  usually, someone who is just laid off and has a car like that has some sort of savings.  and if they don't, they do the practical thing and sell it or downgrade, UNLESS- they're really trying to rip off the government.

While that is true. If they got laid off yesterday the may not have sold it yet or like I said they could be riding with a friend or relative or it was borrowed.

very true, but i still judge.  i know of too many situations where the riding with a friend or borrowing thing is not the case.... so of course i always think the worst.  especially if they are using food stamps to buy crap that is not healthy.  there are some regulations on what you can buy, but not as many as there should be.
