If your DC was potty trained within the past 2-4 months...

If you PT your DC within the past few months, do you still ask them if they need to potty sometimes?  Or, do you just keep your mouth shut and let them initiate 100% of the time?  My DS has just recently gotten good at telling me when he needs to go, but I still sometimes ask him if he needs to - particularly when we are out.  I'm wondering if I should continue to ask/remind him or just leave him alone about it now that I know he gets it?

  • Ha!  My son has been potty trained for almost a year and I still ask him if he needs to go.  He's really good at telling me when he has to go, but I get nervous when he's been outside playing for awhile, etc...like maybe he doesn't want to interrupt what he's doing or something.  Also, sometimes I catch him doing the "potty dance" but yet he tells me he doesn't have to go.

  • I do still ask him out of habit. He had an accident two days in a row now, so I seem to be asking him even more. Before today, he has always told me when he has to go. We have been on vacation and have just gotten home, so that may have affected his pt'ing a bit (at least that is what I'm chalking it up to).

  • The only time I ask now is when we are out & about knowing that a potty is not going to be readily available.

  • Yes, I ask her if I think it's been a long time or if she's really distracted having fun. I also ask her when we're about to get in the car.

And I make her sit on the potty before we leave the house to go somewhere - this was the rule in my house growing up too, even at elementary school age, everybody sits on the toilet before car trips of 30 minutes or more.

But in most cases I just ask her and only take her if she says she needs to go.

  • I try to remember to ask her if I'm thinking of it and realize she hasn't gone in a long time.  But, she hasn't had an accident in a month or two so she's pretty much got it at this point.  A reminder can't hurt every now and then though!
  • We still ask her pretty often and sometimes just announce that it's time to go potty, if she hasn't gone in a while.  Otherwise, she's been known to say she doesn't have to go, and then pee her pants 30 seconds later.
