Formula Cost...how?

For those that FF, how did you handle the cost of it?  The girls are on NeoSure, which we have been able to find for $14.63 per can.  I have some cuopons, but they don't last forever.  We are now just switching over to all formula due to supply and time issues.  What are some ways that you used to help with the cost of formula?  Or is there really nothing that I can do?

 Thanks!

  • Asking local family or good friends to sign up and get formula checks to share with you would help! We have several friends who offered to "supply" us. Also, if you qualify for WIC, they would give you vouchers that would cover all or most of your formula.

  • My girls qualified for WIC, but we spent the first month & a half buying their formula. I bid on checks on eBay, signed up my mom and MIL, and traded other checks w/nesties.

  • I wish we qualified for WIC!  I did a quick look when the girls were born and I think my DH and I make too much money.  It stinks though.  We make too much to qualify for anything, but not enough to afford anything.  We live in a HCOL area.
  • Stagger who you sign up for checks for different addresses because they will stop coming after 2 months.  At first you get a lot.  Then when they stop coming you sign up your reserved addresses.  This way you keep getting them.

I haven't bought a can of formula yet without a coupon/check.  I sign up all addresses with all three (enfamil/Goodstart/Similac) and then trade them on the swapspot board or Craigslist.

I have also heard that your Pedi can contact the formula company representative (salesperson) and they can get you freebies.  I haven't done this so I personally can't say it works.

ditto this. My pedi office asks every time I come in what kind of formula we use so they can give us samples. As of right now we aren't using any my babies are EBF.

  • We didn't qualify for WIC either.  My pedi would give us samples, I signed all my family up for the coupons/checks, and I contacted the company and they sent me free samples.  I would also ditto the suggestion of asking your pedi to contact the company.  It was so expensive to ff my kids.  I don't even know how we did it financially during that time to be honest, we just did.  Good luck!
  • We had them on Enfamil and Similac until they were 3m--it was $75 a week for formula!! Luckily, at the 3m mark we were told they can digest the store brands better and we switched. They had a little bit of an upset tummy, but adjusted pretty easily.

  • My babies were on enfamil the 22 cal and when we left neo there was some info from enfamil on getting a free case. I called the number and had a lot of friends and family call so we were able to get more free formula. I pumped also so my kids did get half and half, and finally i switched them to the sam's brand formula. A lot cheaper.
  • Call your insurance company and see if they will cover it if your doctor writes a prescription.  That is what mine did and the whole 12 months they were on it, I didn't pay a dime.

And I have a ton leftover.  Looks like you are not far from me.  I am South of Boston.  I could sell it to you cheap!!!

  • My pedi office filled out a form for both Similiac and Enfamill.  I got 2 cases of RTF formula from both companies.

Enfamil actually first sent me the wrong formula, I called them up and asked what I should do, they sent me 2 more cases of the correct formula

I am actually going to donate the formula that I don't use which is the Enfamil AR.

In addition every time I go to the pedi's office they give me formula.  I never ask, they just give it to me.  Although I am EBF, I take it since I have no time to pump.  They get a bottle if I am out and I am starting to use the powder for their cereal.

Also - whatever I don't end up using I plan on donating.
