Clicky Poll: carseat forward or rear after 1 yr?

DD's carseat is still rear-facing, based on the safety reports I have seen. She HATES car rides (used to love them except the last few months can't handle anything over 15 minutes and will no longer sleep in the car - even at nap times). I have heard so many peopel say turning them forward made them happier in the car so thinking about it. Obviously I'd rather my child be cranky and safe, but she is not a small kid for her age either...[Poll]

  • DD used to be really fussy in the car, but we got a set of cds called "102 Children's Songs".  It's a 3 disc set, and DD absolutely loves them.  She sits in her seat listening to the music and even singing along to some of them.  She's pretty tall for her age, but she seems comfortable rear-facing to me.  I don't think it was a comfort issue--I think she was just bored.

  • DD is still rear facing which I'm happy about because of all the safety reports you're talking about.

I have to say, though, that DD doesn't seem to mind being rear facing at all and is generally pretty chill in car.  I'm all for keeping her rear facing as long as possible but I'm not about to pass judgment on a mom of a 1+ year old who meets the weight and height reqs whose kid screams bloody murder if she's rear facing for turning the car seat to forward facing.  Having a kid screaming at the top of her lungs for hours and constantly reaching back to tend to a pissed off rear facing baby while driving can't be the safest driving conditions either...

  • She is actually rear facing in my car and in a forward facing in DH's truck- which we only use on the weekends.  Once #2 comes, she'll have to go to forward facing in my car and we'll use her infant seat for him.

DS is still only 19 lbs so he can't go forward facing yet.  Our infant carseat goes until 30 lbs so I'll keep him there until he outgrows it in either weight or height (looks like height will be first).  But he also loves the carseat now.  Have you tried a fun mirror or toy?

  • DD is still rear-facing at 16 months but she is also not yet 20 lbs, so it's really not even an option for us yet.  Our pediatrician said to try for rear-facing for as long as possible, and she's fine with it now, so we'll try to ride it out for as long as we can.

Glad to see someone doesn't give me the worst mother of the year award. DD would make herself throw up she cried so hard evvverytime she was in her seat. Another mom told me "It's not that hard to turn up the radio and tune it out".

  • I will be honest, we were going to wait as long as possible to flip her, but instead, we flipped her last week.  we went on a road trip this weekend to see my grandparents, and it made the trip 11,000 times better.  plus we could see her and she could see us too.

its really made things easier in our lives

  • Have you tried a mirror.  DD loves to play peak-a-boo with the mirror and her blanket.
