Poll: What "nestism" do you hate?

I hate (hate, hate) when people use "Everything in moderation" as a blanket statement.

Yes, for some things moderation is fine but for other things, doing something in "moderation" isn't good enough.  This bothers/bothered me most on the tri boards in reference to lunch meat.  It only takes ONE TIME to get listeria from lunch meat so having it in moderation really isn't good enough (in my opinion).  That's like saying you won't get pregnant without using a condom just as long as you only do it in moderation....it just takes once!

On the other hand, things like a small glass of wine during pregnancy is fine in moderation so that would be a time when it is okay to say you can consume "in moderation".

  • ... and peoples definition of moderation varies.
  • I have to agree with you on the moderation thing - moderation is relative too, so my definition of moderate wine consumption could be a helluva lot more than yours since I drink it every day. ?But is this really a "nestism?" ?I see it in a lot of other places.?

True, but FAS can happen from one drink. I'm guilty of saying "everything in moderation"

yes.  I drank two small glasses of wine when I was pregnant but did not eat COLD lunch meat.

  • imagebrandonsfuturewife07:

    so what you're saying is...

LOL that's what I read too....

  • I completely agree with the OP: it bugs to no end when people pull the moderation thing with lunch meat.  Eat it, don't eat it, whatever - but at least understand the risk.

My nestism peeve is "here's my 2 cents."  I hate the phrase in general, but hate it especially when people feel the need to start a whole new post hours after a subject has died, and start it with that nails-on-chalkboard phrase.

  • imagebrandonsfuturewife07:

    so what you're saying is...

Seriously... I would go for the lunch meat before having a glass of vino while pregnant.  That's just me

that is just really odd to me.  i cannot put into words why, though.

  • imagebrandonsfuturewife07:

This is what I was thinking. I asked my doctor about lunch meat... the chance of contracting listeria from lunch meat is very very very slim. Especially if you are getting it from a place that takes care of their meat.

So it is more a matter of YOUR opinion on what you can have in moderation. SO you are annoyed people don't share your exact opinion on portion?

I was going to say this too....From what I've read there isn't a magic # of drinks while pregnant that causes FAS soooo having 2 glasses COULD cause it.  YOU just never know.

  • i think bsc is totally overused.
  • I wouldn't really say "everything in moderation" is a nestism, though.  It's just one of those phrases like "everything happens for a reason" that people spout off everywhere...

I get what you're saying about "everything in moderation" re: the lunch meat but another way of interpreting that is "hey, use common sense - take the whole OMG LUNCH MEAT!!!!11!!!! sentiment in a temperate way.  Don't get sandwiches from the back of some guys van.  But also don't have a heart attack if you find out there was ham in the panini you just ate.  Have a moderate, reasoned, common sense approach to stuff."

eh, I was using lunch meat as an example.  I also drank coffee and caffeinated pop during my pregnancy but did that in moderation (1 or 2 per day)

I realize that "moderation" is relative... that isn't my point.

  • I guess that's not really nestism but I just hate it lol

No, the point is that moderation doesn't really apply here.  There is no "safe" amount of listeria - you either get it from the lunch meat, or you don't.  And it really doesn't have anything to do with how an establishment "handles" their meat, either - contamination can happen in processing, before it ever gets to a store.

I have a friend who is pg and smokes, but won't eat cold lunch meat. It makes NO sense to me. You will pump poisonous chemicals into your baby but won't risk bacteria that will most likely NOT harm your fetus.

    in terms of fun posts...

  • And I don't really know what does and doesn't count as a nestism. I guess I get bothered by how much people freak out over small things, especially choices people are making for their children. It doesn't effect you if someone lets their child watch Sesame Street! Get over it! And don't get me started about "Bumpers and blankets will kill your baby!" people.

  • I hate when people try to pretend like they're not AWing.

If the subject of your post is "Will my child ever talk" and then in the post you say, "he is 10 months old and only says mama, dada, baba, puppy, kitty, chair, milk, boobie, TV, book..." obviously you are just posting to AW that your kid can talk.

  • imageWassygirl:
i think bsc is totally overused.

    Haha, this too.

  • I get annoyed when someone gets slammed on a comment they make just because of their post count.  I.E. "so you with 3 posts are going to call me out!"  Annoying.  Judge a post on the content not on the person's post count.

  • "I turned out just fine."

    That being said....

I ate Subway often while pregnant, and I always had a large Mt Dew with it, and Adam turned out just fine.

Aside from the extra pinkie on his left hand, that is.

  • Well, it's not a phrase, but I hate the nestie tendency to take a post, and totally ignore the original subject in order to lambast the OP for a phrase/picture.  There's my two cents.

Thank you for getting my point.  This isn't about me not liking people that have a different opinion than me.  I have nothing against people that do eat lunch meat while pregnant, as long as they fully understand the risk they are taking.

I remember this past fall there was a big listeria outbreak in Canada at a packaged meat plant.  I'm sure everyone that bought the product assumed it would be safe because it didn't come off the back of some random guy's truck.

I hate the fact that everyone thinks and expects all of their children and their friends children to be the same. ALL babies are different. Accept it and move on. I understand asking questions and getting advice but it's not rule or law so don't complain when it doesn't work... you're the Mom, you do the work and figure it out.

  • How did this turn into a listeria debate?

I hate it when people AW their child in my thread. ?For example- I AW yesterday that Lily finally STTN (at 10 months) and someone with a 6 month old responded with something to the point of they understood how I felt because they were SO happy when their little one FINALLY STTN. Uh, no. ? It's not the same situation.?
