why is it called "Rash Guard?"

... that SPF 50 spandex clothing you can buy... it's called rashguard.  Is that like 'sunrash' also known as sunburn?

    I wondered the same thing.

    This is a really dumb reason, but I don't like that it is called "rash guard" so I won't buy one for DD.

    They are designed to mimic the Rash Gaurds that surfers wear.  The surfer Rash Gaurd stops the rash you can get from having your flesh on the board/wax all day long... it ain't pretty.

    It is surf clothing so surfers do not get burned from the board.
