SAHM's-how often do you get a day off?

How often do you get to be alone to do something YOU want to do?  I'm really having a hard time with this since DD2 has been here.  She's a really fussy baby, who apparently only calms down for me.  I haven't done anything besides shower alone a few times since she's been born.  Just wondering what everyone else's average was.

Re: SAHM's-how often do you get a day off?

  • I never ever get a full day off, I do get a night off about once a week. I have not had a full day off since way before DS was born.
  • oh, wow.  Kate is 8 months old and I have only been out twice by myself to do something *fun*.  Once a movie with a girlfriend and once for 30 mins in Starbucks.

  • I voted other, but I've had a set day off each week since I started SAH fulltime again last August.  My MIL takes Jackson on Wednesdays and they go to a library class and spend the day together.  He also has MMO on Mondays from 9-11:30.

Other than that, it's other because it's as needed.  My MIL is retired and is almost always available during the day and if I have plans in the evenings or on weekends, it's not an issue for MH that I go off alone.

When Jackson was a new baby, MH did bathtime and night time bottle before bed to give me an hour or so to myself without baby duty.  That was nice.  And again, my MIL was available to watch Jackson during the day when I stayed home for the first year of his life.  I didn't often take her up on it, but I think the idea that it was an option helped me stay sane.

  • I get 4 hours a week when R is in dc.  Once this baby is born, then..none unless I specifically ask DH, which I expect I would rarely do.

  • I could have written your post when DD was under a year old. I was never anywhere without her. She just did not want anything to do with DH.

Now that she is 2 she spends more time with him and lets him do things with her but she is over him after about 3 hours.

  • I used to have a babysitter who came 11 hours a week. 8 hours of watching Ava, and 3 hours of cleaning.  That meant I would go out twice a week for 4 hours- errands, to Borders for a magazine and coffee, etc..  She moved and I haven't had her since Feb.

So now, I don't really get a day off ever- just a few nights here and there with girlfriends for dinner and a movie once MH comes home.

Maybe three times a year? The last time was probably my birthday back in December.

  • I voted once a month, but when DD was still BFing it was pretty much never.  She didn't like bottles and I didn't like leaving her.  Once she was weaned I started to get out on my own a lot more.
  • Well, DH works 8 days a week so normally I would say I never get a day off but we did have a weekend away recently.  I will sometimes go to the grocery store or Target after the kids are in bed.  I guess that doesn't really count but I'll take it.
  • I can count on one hand the number of times.

  • A whole day?  NEVER.  Since Ben has been born, I've gotten my hair done while my parents watched both kids (2 hours) and gotten one pedicure while DH watched them both (1 hour) and that is it.  Sometimes DH will take Kate, and she goes to school 2 mornings a week, but now that Ben is here I rarely get time alone.  I hope that gets more frequent once I wean.
  • I never get a full day off, but I do have 2 nights a month that I go out.  Once to play bunco and once to scrapbook.

  • I cannot recall EVER having an entire day off (and I can count on one hand the shorter periods of time alone) ... wow.  Need to find a way to fix that.
  • I've never had a whole day but I'm breast feeding and hate pumping so I choose to be with the baby a lot. I've been to Target by myself a few times. Best case scenerio is is my husband stays home with the big girl and I just take the baby with me.?

Babies are so easy compared to toddlers. DD is 23 months and so much more work. I look back at having a 2 month old only and laugh at myself. ?

never a full day that I can think of.  About 3x/week I go for a walk by myself at night.  Every Saturday it's just me and DD when DH takes DS out.  DD is very easy (when I'm on my elimination diet) and so it feels like time off.

you should consider a hypoallergenic formula trial and see if that helps.I wonder if your DD is hurting.

  • I rarely get "out" even though I have willing babysitters.  Most of my friends live pretty far outside the city and between gas and tolls and money being tight I can't go out and hang out with them that often.  Also, my neighborhood isn't one where I can come in late and park and walk to my apartment alone (great during the day, but somewhat sketchy at night), so that limits getting out in the evening unless DH is available to meet me and go with me to park the car (meaning either he's with me or DD is so we're not taking her out of bed).

  • My DD was the same way as your DD2 is. Aubrey was attached to me all.the.time. And I didn't get a break until I dyed my hair back to blonde (when DD was 1 year old) and actually had to be at the salon for 2 hours... so there was no choice! =) Now I try to go out for a girls night or have dinner with a friend about once a month. And I also try to run a few errands without DD because the little things go a long way sometimes. =)  GL Sum!!! I know things have been tough for you lately, but this too shall pass!

  • I get about one full day off a week. DH takes them to the inlaws, and I get to relax. Other than that, they're pretty much with me full-time these days. Sometimes DH will drop one of them off at his dad's house on the way to work, which makes for a nice, quiet(er) day too.

  •  I scrapbook, and try to go to one really long crop  (10hrs) once every 6 weeks.  DH hits the roof when i ask to go.  So I no longer ask, I tell.  He plays cards w/ the guys once a week.
  • We have a sitter from 9 to 4 every other Monday.  I also go out in the evening once or twice a month.  When Sam was nursing/younger, I went out MUCH less often.  The sitter started about a year ago (Sam is two this month).
