DH has been complaining of back pain for about a week now. From what we can find on the internet, it sounds like it's stress-related given the location, and the internet said a lot of times this kind of pain is relieved with chiropractic care.
However, my mother managed to scare the crap out of him with this story about the man who used to clean our carpets. Apparently his daughter was paralyzed by a chiropractor and left a vegetable. So DH is freaked out and doesn't even want to see a doctor. I am trying to convince him that chiropractors could actually help.
Can anyone actually vouch for this? And how to they work-- do you see a general doctor first and then a referral to a chiropractor? Are chiropractors covered by insurance?
Re: NBR: Anyone used a chiropractor?
I saw one a few years back after a bad car accident. She was WONDERFUL. When I went in she had a 12 week plan, if it didn't help then we were done with her and we would try other measures. Unfortunatly it didn't work. Through I found massage therapy which did. I felt no obligation to continue her services though.
More success stories come from my sister and my boss. Both had wonderful experiences. My sister would even go to hers throughout her pregnancies.
I think with all things medical there are some tragic stories of "someones friends, aunts, brothers, cousins, husbands, so and so's". Hopefully your DH doesn't read too much into that and does some reasearch. Sounds like he needs some releif.
As for how it works. I did not need a referral and yes my insurance covered it. But I think this depends on what plan you have.
Good Luck!
I saw a chiropractor regularly several years ago for recurrent lower back pain. I was getting a massage every couple of weeks and it was not really helping with the back pain, so my massage therapist actually referred me to her chiropractor. I decided to try it out to see if it would help. It was fantastic! I started out seeing him 2-3 times per week and eventually decreased the number of visits. It was tremendously helpful. It was covered by my insurance for a certain number of visits in a 12-month period after my co-pay.
You do hear a lot of horror stories about chiropractors, but I think as long as you visit one that is reputable and recommended by either your doctor or someone you trust you are in good hands. One of my co-workers is seeing one now for neck pain and she can't say enough good things about him. Some of the "adjustments" they do seem questionable to some people, but if you see an experienced person I think the risk is minimal.
