Success after IF

Would you go on a cruise during 1st trimester?

We are trying to plan a vacation and my DH came across a great deal on a Caribbean cruise.  If everything continues to go well, I should be 11 - 12 weeks at that time.  I've never been on a cruise, so I have no idea what to expect and what "risks" I might run into.  Maybe I'm better off just relaxing on a beach?

Re: Would you go on a cruise during 1st trimester?

  • I'd think relaxing on a beach would be better!  Yes We are going on vacation in a couple weeks and I'll be 12-13 weeks while we are gone.  I am excited about laying on the beach but not sure how many boating activities I'll be up for considering how nauseated I feel some days.  I guess it just depends on how you are feeling and if you can handle being on a boat...

  • Because I was so sick, no, I would not want to go on a cruise. If you are feeling well, I don't see a problem with it!
  • I would go on the vacation that provides the most flexibility.  I was majorly exhausted for my 1st trimester--taking a shower required a nap afterwards because I was so worn out.

Most women seem to have some discomfort of m/s but I think that you'd likely be fine.

  • It's so dependent on your individual situation. I felt GREAT most of my pg so I would absolutely have gone on a cruise. But I can see if you're not feeling well or you've had spotting or something and want to take it easy that you'd feel better and "safer" closer to home -- or at least in the states.
  • I LOVE cruises so I would definitely go.  If it's your first time cruising though I would be hesitant.  You don't know how you will react to being on the ship and if you have any m/s or anything you might be miserable.

  • Dh and I are planning on going away the 1st wk in June. Before we made the final plans we asked my ob if it would be alright. She actually encouraged us to go!

So I would say going on a cruise would be alright. Enjoy it!

  • I would go but I love cruises. It is perfectly safe to travel in the 1st tri. I would ask your OB if any of the OTC anti-nausea meds would be safe in case this is a problem for you. This may be your last chance for a while.

  • We are going on a Alaskan cruise at the end of this month (we booked before I got my BFP) and I will be 8 weeks along then. The only thing I am worried about is possibly feeling sick the whole time, and I plan on asking my  RE about some meds to help if that happens. I do no have ms yet, but I am only 4.5 weeks now.

I cant wait!! I love cruising!!

  • I did go on a 7 day cruise between my 11 and 12th weeks.  the only thing that sucked was that I couldn't drink!

I'd been on them before, so I knew what to expect.  I had no m/s, and don't get sea sick.  Although, truthfully, those big cruiseliners don't rock much.

We planned easier excursions than we normally would've (partly because there are a bunch that won't take pregnant women), but did snorkle.  We had a beach day, and a just walking around puerta rico night. Then a few days on the ship.

Do be prepared to want to nap a lot, but its not really that big of a deal.  A nice snooze on the beach chairs is great!  And, there's food everywhere, all the time, so you can always get snacks.

General cruising tips:  Pick the later dinner seating.  That way you're not rushing from your excursion to dinner, and, if you're hungry, there is still other food available to snack on.

"Formal" night is more like black pants and fancy shirt night.  You'll see everything from dressy jeans to formals and tuxes, but DH doesn't own a suit and just wears kahki's and a tie.

Bring a waterproof camera, even just a disposable one.  and "drugs" for you and DH.  You don't want to have to buy that stuff on the ship, its insanely expensive.
