What to do about babbling baby @ 2am??

Cal's taken to showing off his new vocal/language skills in the middle of the night.  He's usually perfectly happy to just babble away in his bassinet at the foot of our bed, so we tend to doze off unless he starts to fuss.  Athough, all that noise makes it difficult to sleep.  I think this behavior is normal and I don't want to try to discourage him from doing it, I'm just not sure how best to handle it as a parent.  Maybe it's not nice for us to ignore him; on the other hand maybe he wants that time to himself (although he seems THRILLED when we go say hi!).  I wish I could read his mind!

What would/do/did you do?
Childhood cancer (DH) + chemo + radiation = 0 sperm.
LO #1 - 1 unmedicated/self-monitored IUI w/ donor sperm.
LO #2 - 1 m/c, 2 BFNs, 4th IUI worked (unmedicated/self-monitored with new donor sperm).

  • Let him babble.  I understand that it seems mean to not indulge him and at least talk to him but he has to learn that night time is for sleeping and if you indulge him by talking or going to his bassinet it will cause problems down the line.

It also may be time to start transitioning him to his own room and using the monitor.

  • Oh and everyone including babies need time to themselves unless he is crying let him be he is fine.

  • Well mine are in their cribs so they're not in the room with us but we just let them be and almost all the time they fall back to sleep within 10 min. You definitely do not want to start talking to them at 2 am. He will think that it's play time and not sleep time. You want him to learn how to fall back to sleep on his own because just like adults, infants wake many times in the night.

Good - sounds like we're doing the right thing!  Thanks!

  • Move him to his crib, let him babble away on his own.

  • If he's not fussing, then I would just let him babble.
  • DD does this as well but she really doesn't fall back to sleep.  It's around 3-4am, normally after she's slept 7-8 hours.  I've been giving her a bottle but now, she doesn't go back to sleep and is getting really fussy.  I have to start putting my foot down.

We have a Sleep Training DVD.  I need to serious and start doing it.  I'm exhausted.
