Baby Names

Updated: DH 'knows' dogs w/ the name

There is a name DH & I like, but DH is hesitant b/c he says one of his good childhood friends used to have a dog named this (I have known DH's friend since DH & I started dating & have never heard him mention this dog) and one of DH's employees has a dog named this. It is a surname. It is not Spot, Fido or Buddy. ;)

WDYT? Would you count out a name b/c in your entire life you have 'known' of two dogs with that name?  I am trying to convince DH he's being silly, but maybe he's not... :)

ETA: It's Cooper.

Re: Updated: DH 'knows' dogs w/ the name

  • I guess it depends on what the dogs name is. Besides that I don;t think it matters. My dogs names at Riley and Sadie and tons of people name their kids that!

  • Nah, I wouldn't "count out" a name I like just because a few dogs have the same name. My name is Maggie, and I grew up with lots and lots of friends and neighbors naming their dogs Maggie. It's no big deal.

My parents' dogs are Sam and Madison ... and we used to have a dog named Hanna. And I have friends with dogs named Madeleine and Noelle. Lots of dogs have people names, I wouldn't let it stop you (unless the dogs are in your family!)

  • i know a lot of people who would. there are some names i couldn't do b/c i think of a dog when i hear them. others don't bother me. however if your DH doesn't want them, silly or not, it's probably back to the drawing board.

  • We're having this same dispute in our house as I think Molly would be adorable for a little girl, and DH had a dog named Molly as a little boy.

So I vote do not rule it out, especially if it's someone else's dog.

  • Some people just like people names for pets! Our cat's name is Chloe and it fits her perfectly. I still love it as a girl's name (not that we would use it. It could get confusing with 2 Chloe's)

it doesn't matter what a dog's name is, as long as it's an actual name and you like it. what is it?

  • A lot of pet names are human names-my cat is Lily. I wouldn't let that bother me as long as you don't currently have a dog with the name. If it was someone else's ages ago, I do think that is silly.

  • DH said the same thing about DSs name (Max) when I first suggested it. And it is actually one of the top ten dog names on some lists, but he got over that. I personally don't care.

I also would not automatically dismiss a name because it's been used by a dog.  My name, Molly, is very popular for dogs, but I think it's also a great human name.

  • I actually considered changing our choice for our son's middle name to the name of my dog, who passed away in March, so clearly, I don't have a problem with using names that are shared with dogs!

Maybe that proves that I'm crazy, but I think his concern is silly.

  • I think I have the #1 dog name-Molly.  It's never really bothered me very much.  I like my name.  I say use the name you both like.  If your DH always thinks of a dog when he hears the name, then you'll probably have to just move on to something different.

  • Sorry...dumb excuse coming from your husband.

BTW, my dog's names are Petra, Jordan and Sienna.  I've seen people with those three names.

  • In our family, we have a Zoe and a Buddy. Plenty of people name their daughter's Zoe. We also have a Harlee & a Kaiah, which are both "people" names.

On the other hand, I know what your DH is talking about. MH likes the name Bailey and I refused because to me it sounds like a dog's name. So idk, it's a personal thing, I think.

  • My parents named my younger brother Eric, when my Dad had a dog by the same name when he was younger... We never made a big deal out of it, its not like its the reason they picked the name or anything. Once he sees your baby boy the dog will be the last thing on his mind. :)
  • I don't think it's big deal, but I could see where your DH may have trouble disassociating the name from the dogs. I would probably try to find something else.
  • Well bottom line is that if your husband is not on board, it is better to come up with something you both like. It's hard I know, DH does not like my favorite name, Matilda. But I am trying to let it go!

Also there are names taht for me are "dog's names" and i could not use them, eg laila and lola.

  • ehh..Cooper does sound kind of like a dog's name to me...altho I can't say that I've known any dogs named Cooper. I just see a chocolate lab for some reason...
