Question for the Catholics

I posted earlier today how the priest who was supposed to baptize DD made a mistake with his schedule and could not longer do it.  He is having the Deacon do it instead.  From what I've read online, the Deacon can't say Mass but can do Baptisms, marriages, etc.  My question - how do you address a Catholic Deacon?  Do you call him "Father?"

Re: Question for the Catholics

  • I'm pretty sure you would address him as Deacon and whatever his name is

  • Do NOT call him father.  "Deacon first name"  is appropriate.
  • Deacon "his name"  at our church we address them by first name...ex:  Deacon Bill
  • at my church back in NY we refer to him as Deacon Mike OR  Deacon P____ (last name)
  • Ditto pp, for example - Deacon Mike did it for DS.
    DS 5 years old
    DD 2 years old

  • I'm Catholic but I didn't know a Deacon can Baptize...I realize technically anyone can Baptize, but I didn't think it was practice for a Deacon to do it unless in an emergency situation.

It is common practice at our church, as well as my parents' church back in CA.

Same here.  The deacon that baptized DS said that he can baptize, marry, and bury, but can not do a full mass.
