3rd Trimester

Worried about dark/black poop...maybe TMI.

Sorry...this is a real poop post...  Last month, I noticed a bit of red blood on the outside on my poop.  So, I called my OB, and they had me come in.  The OB did a rectal exam and did notice hemorrhoids.  This is my third baby and I definitely had them after I delivered my first and can't remember if I had them w/ my 2nd.  He told me not to worry.

On occasion since then, I've noticed very dark, almost black poop swirled w/ normal color poop.   I know this can be from my iron supplements, but I'm still really concerned.  I called my OB this am, spoke w/ the nurse and she told me that black blood could be normal from internal hemorrhoids and it could be from the iron in my prenatal?   I did ask her for the dr to call me and am waiting for that call.

Any others w/ similar poop experience?  Sorry if this was TMI!!

  • any type of hemorrhoid should only produce bright red blood. Probably just the iron, but it's good just to double check. GL!

  • I have dark poop from my iron supplements.

  • I swear I crap coal since they put me on iron supps.  In my case, it hasn't been cause for concern.

  • I've had this problem before. The color is probably caused by iron supplements and the blood comes from roids. The doc told me to increase my fiber intake and drink more water. Plus Colace is your new best friend.
  • Did any of your PNVs cause dark poop or just the iron supplements?

Ditto..the iron makes it a really dark black/green.

  • For me it's the iron.

On a side note, I increased my water intake a couple of weeks ago, and I cannot believe the impact it's had on my "regularity".  I've gone #2 almost everyday!!!  Yay!

  • I've got the dark poop from the iron and occasional bleed from hemmroids.
