I'm looking for ?a name for our little girl that is Biblically based or has something referring to God in the meaning. ?At the same time, I want it to be uncommon so Mary is out lol.?
Selah is a biblical word that was not used as a name. It's in the Psalms, and I believe it's written in between the psalms meaning to pause and reflect on God. Some footnotes say it's a musical term. In Hebrew it means rock, but in the scripture, its used as a much more beautiful word.
I love Biblical names. If you find an online concordanance of the Bible, you can search words like "woman" "wife" "sister" and find just about every female name used in the Bible.
There are also a lot of really pretty terms/places that make good names: Selah, Canticle, Galilee, Eden, Marah... there's a ton more.
My favorites are: Naomi, Esther, Rachel, Leah, Sarah, and Elizabeth.
You can also go with some variations like Gabrielle (from Gabriel). And you don't have to go with the Hebrew spellings of names. Mine is Rebecca and I consider it to be Biblical even if it's spelled differently.
Another idea is to use a search on babynamesworld or a similar site and search by Hebrew origin. There are many beautiful Hebrew names that have meanings that refer to God and faith.
My favorite females in the Bible that are known for their good character are:
Some of my favorite place names that are Biblical are Jordan and Bethany. I also like the names Kristian/Christian, Christy, Elyse (means consecrated to God) and Gracyn as references to faith.
You probably know this, but I always remind people to keep in mind that not all Biblical names have good connotations or meanings. (i.e - Delilah was a temptress and comes from the root "weak or poor", Jezebel was the name of two people in the Bible that were both known for immorality, etc.) This doesn't matter if you love the name, but if you are choosing it as a Biblical reference it might matter.
Even Eden to me is a tough one. Do you want your daugther named after the place where it all started going downhill? That's a neg. perspective I know, but still.
Azariah was Abednego's (of the fiery furnace) original name I think. It was mostly the name of men in the Bible, but I think there might have been a woman named Azariah too.
I think its a pretty name for a girl, and I love it!
