MoMs of 36 or 37 weekers

Did you notice any delays in reaching developmental milestones? My boys were born at 36w6d and my one DS is achieving all milestones appropriate for his age as far as I can tell, but my other DS is behind him and doesn't seem to be doing some things a 3 month old is supposed to be doing (really, I am just concerned because he is still not "talking"/cooing like my other DS--everything else seems to be pretty good). Should I be cutting him slack since he was technically 3 weeks early or no because 37w is considered "full term"??

  • Yes, but not until they were much older than your boys right now. They had a gross motor delay- didn't walk until they were 16 and 17m, and are delayed in their speech still at 20m. Kids develope at different rates, my Molly did all the physical things first, but Lilly made the sounds first, smiled first, STTN first... Mine were born at 37w1d.

  • Mine were born at 36 weeks and I have one that still cant hold his head for any extended amount of time.  Im very worried and if the pedi doesnt offer an EI eval next week I am going to throw a fit.

  • My boys were born at 36w6d as well.  One DS is more physical; held his head up, rolled over first, etc, my other DS "talked", smiled and laughed first.  They seemed to be about a week behind but right on for their adjusted age.
  • My boys were born at 37 weeks 3 days and have been very different with their developmental milestones.  One DS hit all the big physical milestones pretty early - rolling, crawling, pulling to stand, etc.  and my other DS was usually a month or more behind him, but much more verbal and better with the fine motor skills (had a better pincer grasp, etc).  I've tried to stop comparing them to each other and to other babies and let them develop at their own pace.  My active guy was not verbal at all for a long time, and he's still less verbal than his brother - but he did find his voice eventually and now babbles away with the best of them :-)

I wouldn't worry too much about your quiet guy at this early stage. If he's hitting all the other milestones, he'll get to the cooing phase when he's ready.  If it's still a concern in a month or so, ask your pedi, but for now I think he's fine - just taking everything in :-)

  • Mine seem to be basically right on. I was worried for a little bit because  Emma was rolling and stuff first and it took Logan another month to do it. But he did all the "talking" first, and she was about a month behind him with that. But the pedi assured me that they will do different things in their own time and not to worry unless they totally don't do something that they should be doing.
  • DS was born at 36w - and was a little slower on the gross motor skills (rolling, crawling, walking, etc) - I attributed it more to him being a little chunk than being 4w early.  He was never out of range for the milestones- but on the lower/slower end of the timeline.

Even though my pedi said they do not age adjust for 4w early- i did always cut him some slack.

  • mine were born at 36w4d and Emma has been right on for everything. Paige has been consistantly about 2-4 weeks behind Emma (depending on what it is). She still isnt rolling over yet..although she is really trying hard these days ;o) i think they are all just different, my pedi doesnt seem to be concerned.
  • My two have hit some milestones on time or early and others have been later.  That can be true for any child though.  Usually DS hits milestones after DD in our situation.
