Baby Names

Caroline

DH and I have narrowed down our girl names to two, and one of them is Caroline.  We both love it.  But I am freakishly weird about not wanting our girl name to be common, and I feel like this is one of those names that is getting popular suddenly.  (It was only at 99th in popularity in '07 according to SS, so maybe I'm just imagining the popularity surge?)  Anyway, how many of you are considering the name Caroline for a girl?  I've seen it a bunch on these boards.  Have you noticed it becoming more popular just among people who are pregnant now?

Re: Caroline

  • I know around here (in Louisiana), Caroline is Super-Popular. I taught a class with 3 Carolines in it, and the other the other 2 classes had 1. So 5 Carolines in the grade, and I know there were some younger and some older as well.?

I think it is a pretty name, but it may becoming popular. If you like you should use it. ?

  • I think it is a realtivly popular name, I know a few little girls with the name. But, I also think it is a very classic name, so even it is popular, it will not be one of those "oh you must have been born in 2009 because your name in Caroline" names, unlike the like the Brayden, Aiden, Jayden phase of boy names.

We were considering it, but a lot of people pronounce it wrong (by saying care-o-lynn) so I took it off the list. I don't want my dd to have a name that gets mispronounced. It is a very beautiful name and I've only met two Carolines in my entire life!
  • iI've noticed it a lot around here but IRL I only know 1. Babynames.com has a tab on the left that says "most popular". Click on that and it will show you the recent popularlity of the name. I think it goes off of the baby name lists.
  • It was #90 on the 100 most popular names from 2008. Not too bad!
  • I like this name. It does seem to be getting popular, but it won't be trendy. It's a classic name like Catherine.?
  • most of my name choices are not even in the top 1000 and i don't want to use a popular name, however, i have recently been LOVING caroline. it's just such a great name. it is definitely not original but it's so pretty. i also love the name carolina, which you might consider.

  • I love the name and we were definitely considering it for a girl.  On the SS website did you look by state or just nationally?  The state search will give you a better idea of popularity in your area...
  • I see it on these boards but havent heard any children being names this in southern indiana...love this name but its not on our list

  • I don't know any but the boards have taught me that Caroline is popular in some areas. It doesn't matter. You could pick a name today that no one and using and find that it's popular in 5-10 years. Don't give up a name you love based on not wanting a common or popular name. Simply because you can never guarantee avoiding it becoming popular.

  • Not considering it, wouldn't use it, but it makes me think of the rap song Caroline (which is a funny song).

  • Caroline is my #1 girl choice.

It is becoming popular, much to my dismay

  • I have a Caroline and it's a very popular name in our area. (central Virginia)  Maybe it's a regional thing. When I checked the SS website, it was still pretty far down on the list. However, in our state it's got to be in the Top 10. There is always another Caroline wherever we go, although I've found most are a bit older than my Caroline. Maybe around 7 or 8. It is a bit more popular than I'd like it to be, but that's because it's a beautiful classic name that works at every level.

Also, even though it's popular it's not obnoxiously popular. Like, it will never be another Jennifer, Michelle, Ashley or Madison.

  • My problem with Caroline is the carol-lyn / carol-line thing.  People never know which one they are supposed to use.  Every Caroline I've ever know (both the lyn and the line kind) have to explain over and over.
