Does Harrisburg Hospital rent pumps?

I would like to breastfeed but I plan to be done before I go back to work.  I would like to pump some to get DH involved and also to bank a little to use after I am done.  I would like to rent if possible to save some money and not buy this huge thing that will only be used for 3 mos.  Anyone know if they rent pumps? I can't find anything on their website.

I guess I should also ask about Holy Spirit too as I may have to go there if the doctor on call is already with someone.

Re: Does Harrisburg Hospital rent pumps?

  • I think they do. Or you could buy used and just replace the parts that touch milk. I didn't understand how that worked but after having my pump I totally get the part about replacing everything but the pump itself. I'm planning to sell mine at the consignment sale in Carlisle later this month, so maybe there will be a few there. Or maybe you have a friend who is done having kids and would sell  you hers?
  • Harrisburg does, but it's a bit pricey IMO.  I was originally going to rent one, but discovered I could buy a Medela Advanced for the cost of 2-3 months rental or so.

  • I bought an evenflo pump and it worked great and it was like $40
  • And in thinking more about this, you might be surprised how easy it is to reduce your milk supply to keep going a little longer. When I went back to work I only BF in the morning and right when we got home from daycare. My body got that and had milk only during those times. It worked great until around 4 months when I had a very high fever for a week and it burned up my milk. Anyway, my point is that you might be able to continue BF/pumping after going to work, even without having to lug the pump to work.
  • I rented one when I had Addy, it was covered by insurance while she was in the NICU and then I rented it for another 2 weeks.  The social worker on the maternity floor set it up for me and it was through a home medical equipment place in Palmyra.  I would talk to  the social worker at the hospital you'll be delivering at and also call your insurance and see what their coverage is...you never know what they cover. Also, the medical equipment place was giving it to me on discounted rate.  I don't recall the amount, but I wanna say it was like $40ish???
  • Talk to a LC.  She may be able to hook you up with a loaner, or be able to rent one to you herself, or at least know where you can get one.

If you don't have the name of an LC yet, it might be a good time to meet one or at least get her contact info in case you need help in those first days!

  • I rarely post but remember being in your shoes not that long ago. The number for the LC at HBG Hospital is 782-5372. They are super nice ladies and can give you all the info you would ever want regarding breastfeeding. Back when I called, about a year ago the price was around $50 and I found that for my intentions it was cheaper to buy a Medela pump which is one of the best around. I'm actually selling mine. I still have the box it came in along with the receipt to verify when it was purchased ... off the top of my head I think it was Sept. I've used it for approx. 6 months. Anyway, if you are interested, my email is heidi_2710@yahoo.com. I live in Camp Hill. Good luck.
