Definitely Old Ebbitt Grill. It is a very historic oyster bar. I am going next week when Collin and I are visiting my parents Can't wait for a martini and oysters!

I second Old Ebbitt Grill if you like seafood. I also recommend Rio Grande (I think there is a location in Bethesda, also one in Arlington right across the street from the Ballston Metro station) if you like Mexican food. Fogo De Chao is a great Brazillian chain that is located on 10 & Pennsylvania Ave NW. Matchbox is a great American/Contemporary restaurant in Chinatown/Gallery Place on 7th & H NW. Also at Chinatown/Gallery Place stop, there is https://www.oyadc.com/ - Oya is a hip restaurant, ambient, and great food. There are some great bars around Clarendon, Georgetown, Capital Hill, and Adams Morgan.
HTH... Feel free to PM me if you need any more info. I work in DC and I'm a NoVA native
I go to DC quite a bit. A couple of hip restaurants that I like are Zaytinya and Marven (as in Marven Gay). Great pizza at Two Amy's. The hot new bar is called the Gibson (no web site because it is supposed to be like a speak easy, but there is a detailed review in the Post). I have friends who like Cork and Vinoteca for wine bars. Five Guys for cheap burgers in Georgetown. I can't remember which one, but one of the hotels downtown has a roof deck bar with awesome views.
Re: DC area restaurant recs
I went here this weekend--it was great!

Old Ebbitt is a popular stop for tourists to lunch at since it's close to the mall and white house. https://www.ebbitt.com
Bobby Van's steakhouse or The Palm are good for a nice dinner.
If you are looking for a quick lunch hit up Potbelly Sandwich works. It is so good. www.potbelly.com SOOOO GOOD!
I am in MD but spend a good bit of time in DC.
I would try Sequoia. When its warm, its a great place to have dinner/drinks on the waterfront (but super busy at happy hour).
