Got my doppler!...but no hb :(

I'm not surprised. The doppler is only 2 MHz and it states that you can hear the hb as early as 10 weeks, I'm barely 10w2d. Plus, I'm on the chunky side so I'm sure my oodles of fat are smothering the baby. I did aim low and had the probe at an angle. Every now and then, the heartbeat rate would pop up (around the 160's) and then it would go away immediately. I know it works because I tried it on my own heart and I'm apparently alive, lol. Any tips?

  • The best thing I can tell you to do is not to freak out and to give it time. I was on the thin side and had bad m/s with DS ( I actually lost 12 lbs my in the first tri). Still, I wasn't able to find the hb with my home doppler until nearly 13w.

    Hang in there!

  • yeah...my doppler caused me so much anxiety that my DH took it away from me... :(  To this day, I have no clue what he did with it and he can't remember either...he hid it somewhere in our house! Not that we'll need it ANY time soon!
  • We got ours at 12 weeks, and it took us awhile to find the hb at first.  Some tips -- go as low as you can (even a bit below the hairline sometimes).  Ava liked to hang out near my pubic bones.  Also, use tons of gel and don't be afraid to press firmly.  Good luck!

  • No tips...I'm sure it's probably the things you mentioned. I think I want to get a doppler, but I'm worried I'm going to become more paranoid and that my belly fat (which there is a lot of) will affect the accuracy. Good thing you're alive!

  • I was 15 weeks before the midwife could find DS heartbeat with her fancy smancy dopple. I had(still have) some extra padding, as well as an anterior placenta and DS was always in strange positions. Give it some more time. Also glad to hear you have a heartbeat!
  • Thanks for the tips, girls.

I'm not freaking out, unfortunetly, I had a feeling this was going to happen. I think the reason I'm so surprisingly calm is because my 2nd u/s is this Thursday so it's only a matter of days before I get to look at the baby again. I did go pretty low but not below my pelvic bone. Also, I didn't use OODLES of the gel, just a tad to make it slippery against my skin. Maybe that was my problem? And yeah, I didn't press too hard. I will give it another shot in a few days. Wish me luck and thanks again!

  • My ob/gyn doesn't even listen for the heartbeat with a doppler until you're 12 weeks along. It was so amazing hearing it. Good luck :)
