Nurseries and Baby Gear

I really don't think we are going to buy a bedding set.

I'm pretty sure we've decided not to get an actual bedding set.  Anyone else?  We both are thinking 'no' for using a bumper, and obviously you can't use a quilt (except for a blanket to lay on during play time) and we don't like the look of matching window treatments, and linen hampers we've seen in sets.  So what we're thinking as of right now, is that we would register for fitted crib sheets (maybe several patterns and colors) and also some cozy blankets which can be used for all sorts of things.  Not only will this save money (whether it's ours, or our loved ones, if we would have registered for a set) but also because it's wasteful for things we won't use.

  • will your room have a theme at all or a color palette to follow...I think that idea is awesome, but the only thing holding me back is dont want it to look like a hodge podge...

Yeah...I definitely want a 'theme' but not sure what that will be yet!! (we have our big u/s today, so hopefully baby will cooperate )  Also...I forgot I want a crib skirt too.  :)

  • we didn't buy a set for our first child. I agree that it's sort of a waste when you can't use half of it. I'm considering buying a set this time only because the one I'm eying cannot not be purchased individually and it's cheaper than the one I wanted for our first born. When were done with it I'll probably craigslist or ebay it.
  • Though the sets are adorable, I'm agreeing with you.  I really didn't expect anybody to purchase the expensive bedding sets and we don't want to either with it being so useless.  Quilts are pretty, but not practical, and bumpers definitely aren't necessary.  We bought some fitted sheets, have plenty of blankets and I just wanted to get a crib skirt too to hide the metal underneath the mattress.  We're having a girl so coordinating a "theme" was more than easy :)
  • We didn't buy a bedding set for DD and we won't for any future children, either... for the same reasons you mentioned--no need for a quilt, didn't use bumpers (when she got older we bought the white breathable ones). A bedding set seemed like a waste of money.

We didn't find out DD's gender before she was born, so we did a Curious George-themed nursery. I made a mobile using CG finger puppets I found on eBay. I had a stuffed CG hanging over the crib. We had 4 framed pieces of CG wall art. For sheets we bought 2 red and 1 yellow... but we wound up using the Ultimate Crib Sheet on top of DD's sheets anyway, so really it didn't matter what color/design the sheets had.

  • We are also not using a bedding set.  Our nursery is sort of a frog theme (determined when I bought a wall organizer that is a frog prince at Ikea recently), with green striped curtains and accents, and denim bedding for the crib and the guest bed we are leaving in the room for when we have guests.

I am registered for green crib sheets, I am making the curtains, crib skirt and duvet cover for the bed myself, and will paint a border around the room.  So we still have a theme, even though we aren't using a "themed" set.

  • I made everything but my flat sheets.

You might want a crib skirt, because it hides whatever you put under the crib.

  • I don't plan on buying a set either. I will purchase solid colored sheets and I will make my own bumper, curtains and matching chair cover.

  • We're doing the same thing. There are so many cute blankets and sheets out there, you'll have no trouble finding stuff you like. This leaves a lot more money left over for wall art and a cute rug, things I'd way rather be spending my money on.

  • I agree, this is what we're doing. We've decided to do the room in a robot theme, and we've picked the colors brown and green, so we registered for a whole bunch of sheets and blankets in patterns and solids that match the colors and theme. I don't like things too matchy and I couldn't find a set that was really my style anyway.
  • Not pregnant yet lurker here but...

I agree with you 100%. For me I love the kinds of decor I see on Ohdeedoh and the like - nice, coordinated, individual, and not cookie cutter at all. I can't imagine walking into a store like Babies R Us and just buying everything in a particular set. There are sets I like, but I'd rather put it all together myself. ?
