Okay, ladies. Nuff said. I think this discussion lends itself to people making their own decisions, to each their own. If you are worried about the risks, don't eat it.
I do think I should point out that no, the corned beef the op is talking about is not "lunch meat" but does still contain Nitrates, which some consider a no-no during pregnancy. Same reason some say not to eat hot dogs.
For those avoiding lunch meat because "a risk is a risk," are you also avoiding driving in cars? I'm fairly sure that the risk is exponentially higher (I have no cite for this other than common sense...).
That's an easy argument to make if you've not suffered repeated m/c's, or infertility. It is insanely difficult to "relax" about a pregnancy you have had to work SO hard to even have, and yes, if avoiding lunch meat for the next 9 months means I've reduced any possible risk to my child, I am going to do it. I'm already a mother- should I avoid driving just because I MIGHT get into a car accident and not be there for my son? Two entirely different things, lunchmeat and cars.
Just thought I'd reply to this. If it makes you feel better, whatever. I've had 5 m/c, although I only have one posted in my sig. I ate tons of lunch meat when I was pregnant with DS, he was obviously born just fine, so I'm not going to avoid it completely. That's just pure torture.
I agree with Gretchen and JakeIansMommy. I'm no stranger to m/c either and it bugs me when people are like, "Oh I'm taking no risks! If you had a m/c you'd understand why!"
Look, if it makes you feel better / safer to avoid a ham sandwich then avoid the ham sandwich by all means. Whatever works for you. But it's impossible to live life taking no risks whatsoever. Driving to the mall to go shopping and decompress with your girlfriends is risky.
You could get into a car wreck. You could eat at the food court and have your food prepared by some 16 year old douchebag who didn't wash his hands and then BAM! E.Coli! And, frankly, the risk of a car wreck on the way to the mall or of a fast food employee having poor handwashing skills is waaaaaaay greater than the risk posed by a ham sandwich.
Edit: So my point is this: The whole, "I just couldn't live with myself if something happened to my child because I was too selfish to give up lunchmeat." I mean FFS - that's ridiculously self-righteous phrasing. It's a ham sandwich not an 8 ball of coke.

So, just because something isn't right for me, that makes me self righteous? I don't get it. All my post said was that I couldn't forgive MYSELF. Not that I would go and lambast someone else for choosing to eat lunch meat. It's a personal choice- I just don't see why it's necessary to insinuate that people who make the choice not to eat lunch meat are ignorant.

I'm not insinuating that people who don't eat lunchmeat are ignorant. And I'm not even calling you self-righteous. I'm taking issue with the phrasing of that particular statement.
The phrasing of, "I just couldn't live with myself if I ate lunchmeat and something happened to my child" is self righteous because it implies that a woman who does eat lunchmeat is so damn hooked on ham sandwiches that she values them over the health of her unborn child and/or that if she ate lunchmeat and, God forbid, something happened to her child, she wouldn't give a damn. That's not true.
I mean, eat lunchmeat or don't. Whatever works. Personally I don't eat lunchmeat, but I still don't think it's fair to imply that women who choose to eat lunchmeat are somehow less concerned for the well being of their unborn children than women who don't eat lunchmeat are.

Well, I apologize that the way I worded it was taken that way- That was in no way what I meant. I simply meant that I'm an insane worrier during this pregnancy and couldn't handle it if I knew I'd done something that I could have prevented. That is all. It was purely a statement about my personal outlook on the matter.
Amazing, isn't it, how lunch meat can get a bunch of women so worked up?
That sucks. My OB rocks the socks off of yours because she gave me the green light to eat lunch meat.
I wouldn't say she is kickass if she didn't give you all the info. My RE and my OB told me no.
Pre-packaged lunch meats often contain high levels of a preservative called sodium nitrate.
The biggest concern with lunch meats during pregnancy is the risk of listeria. Listeria is a bacteria that can be found in deli meats as well as vegetables and processed foods. This bacteria can cause an illness known as Listeriosis, which can cause any number of problems during pregnancy such as:
- Miscarriage - Premature delivery - Infection to the newborn - Death to the newborn (about 1/4 of the cases of perinatal Listeriosis result in stillbirth or neonatal death.)
You realize you are more likely to be in a car accident than contract listeriosis?

Thanks for jumping on your soapbox, but STFU. No where did I say that my OB did NOT inform me of all the details. She and I actually had a discussion about it at my 6 week appointment. You sound like a moron preaching this to me and everyone else on the boards.
Actually the person that sounds like a moron would be the person thats making an a$$ of herself because someone posted what the risks are for listeria. These are valid facts,so do yourself a favor and the rest of us dont post if you cant be nice! Someone might have questions and who are you to tell them they are stupid.

Wow. How did this post even get to this point? The OP did not ask whether it's ok to eat deli meat. She has obviously already made that decision. She just asked whether corned beef was deli meat. Completely different questions, but whatever.
I do not belief that corned beef is deli meat (neither is roast beef). Have a nice lunch.
Personally I don't think that deli meat is the healthiest thing to eat even non-PG.

Man, go take a shower and come back to see what happens.
I'll just ditto JakeIan'sMommy and be done with it.
Enjoy your lunchmeatless Sunday's ladies!
