Is corned beef considered lunch meat?

My mom is making corned beef and cabbage today.  Is it like lunch meat or safe?

  • Lunch meat is safe therefore I think corned beef would be, too.

    ditto!! Its fine.

  • HAHAHA i always laugh when I hear or see "corned beef" for some reason

    ?

Anyways you should be fine- lunchmeat is safe if you heat it up to a certain temperature. ?You cook corned beef before you eat it so it should be all good.

    ?

  • I haven't had corned beef before...but isn't it cooked? Like steaming hot?  If so, it is fine.  (my RE told me no lunch meat either).

  • Corned beef is heated up to steaming hot - unless you plan on eating an entire multi-pound brisket by yourself, you're fine. Relax.

  • Corned Beef is literally just salted beef.

It became popular among Irish immigrants working on the railroads because, as they worked west, farther and farther away from civilization, it became more and more difficult to get the men the nutrition they needed to do that kind of work. Salt is a preservative. Along with the salted beef the railroads sent out potatoes, cabbage and carrots - all food that has high nutritional value and holds well with out refrigeration.

I wouldn't say she is kickass if she didn't give you all the info. My RE and my OB told me no.

Pre-packaged lunch meats often contain high levels of a preservative called sodium nitrate.

The biggest concern with lunch meats during pregnancy is the risk of listeria.  Listeria is a bacteria that can be found in deli meats as well as vegetables and processed foods.  This bacteria can cause an illness known as Listeriosis, which can cause any number of problems during pregnancy such as:

    -  Miscarriage
    -  Premature delivery
    -  Infection to the newborn
    -  Death to the newborn (about 1/4 of the cases of perinatal Listeriosis result in stillbirth or neonatal death.)

  • I have to agree with the "No Lunchmeat" people.. Listeria or whatever- it's unsafe. My doc said no way to eating it unless heated up. I'm sure once in awhile it's fine but wouldn't you rather be safe?

  • My Dr. said since there is a slight (and I mean slight) risk of listeria that heating it up might not be a bad idea...

She also said I am more likely to be hit by a mack truck on my way to the deli than actually getting listeria.

sushi and lunchmeat are completely different.  The low risk of listeriosis is a bit different than worrying about high mercury levels.

Okay, well the girl who posted this is dumb for asking this. She asks stupid things constantly! Everyone on this board knows you should heat it up a little bit. Corned beef is warm, so what's the problem? Plus the fact she could just google it. Duh!

Now this is a stupid question.  There are some risks you can't avoid.  I cannot avoid being in a car at times...I CAN avoid eating lunch meat, sushi, etc.  And actually, I am, at this time, avoiding all risks, considering I am on bed rest.

That's an easy argument to make if you've not suffered repeated m/c's, or infertility. It is insanely difficult to "relax" about a pregnancy you have had to work SO hard to even have, and yes, if avoiding lunch meat for the next 9 months means I've reduced any possible risk to my child, I am going to do it. I'm already a mother- should I avoid driving just because I MIGHT get into a car accident and not be there for my son? Two entirely different things, lunchmeat and cars.

Just thought I'd reply to this. If it makes you feel better, whatever. I've had 5 m/c, although I only have one posted in my sig. I ate tons of lunch meat when I was pregnant with DS, he was obviously born just fine, so I'm not going to avoid it completely. That's just pure torture.

  • Listerios is rare. I've never gotten it prior to pregnancy and I eat lunch meat at least twice a week with this pregnancy (and all is well). If you want to avoid it, good for you. If you want a sandwich just don't be stupid about it and eat 7 day old lunch meat. The anxiety some of you on this board seem to have surrounding this is not good for the baby either IMO so calm down and eat a turkey sandwich if you end up craving one. MMM now I want a turkey sandwich.....

And that is your choice. All the other poster was trying to do was put the information out there, so the OP could make an informed decision, rather than just basing it upon the opinions of others. OP really should have just Googled it herself, or talked to her Dr. about it, but whatever, she obviously likes to ask stupid questions.

I just know that I personally, couldn't live with myself if something DID happen to my baby, just because I couldn't give up lunch meat (which, I can live without anyways- I rarely eat it as is, just because it's not very healthy for you overall). I've worked too hard just to GET pregnant with this child- I can't in good consious do anything that, even in the slightest chance, may harm it.
