Baby Names

A question

We love, love, love Caroline. Do you think people will call her Carol? Gosh, I can't tell you how much I hate that. I feel like it's a 55 year old woman.?

Re: A question

  • I think people will follow your lead.  If you don't call her Carol, I don't think anyone else will either.  I love the name!  GL

  • No, I think you're safe. It shouldn't come as a surprise on here that I like nicknames, and even I wouldn't say "Carol" in general conversation, let alone as a commonly used nn.

  • No I don't think anyone uses Carol anymore or would think to come up with it.

  • No, I don't think it will be an issue.  I know three Carolines - two go by Caroline and one goes by Carrie.  I don't think any of them have had issues with anyone calling them Carol.

  • I don't think anyone will use Carol.

And Caroline is a lovely name! Perfect for any age, classic and beautiful. Great choice!

  • I have quite a few friends named Caroline (or Carolyn.....it's a popular name in the south).  Not one of them have ever been called Carol so I don't think you need to worry.  Smile

  • I wouldn't think Carol as a nn - I would see Carrie, Caro, Lynn...

Or, if you always call her Caroline, then that's likely what everyone else will call her too.?

  • I highly doubt it. I have a cousin Caroline and no one has ever called her anything else.

  • Nope, I think they'll call her Caroline. I know 2 girls with that name and have never heard them referred to as Carol. :)
  • I know a ton of Carolines.  Nicknames include Carrie, Caro, Care, Care-bear, and Carley (that one is to differentiate her from her mom, who is also Caroline).  The only Carols I know are middle-aged women who are named Carol, not Caroline.
  • I wouldn't think to call a Caroline Carol - ever.  Maybe Carrie.  My mom's name is Carol (and you guys were close - she's 59Stick out tongue).

Really, if I were introduced to someone with a particular name, I wouldn't assume to shorten it in anyway unless it was a really close friend  and I'd "earned" the right to use a nn.

  • That's my name and I have never been called Carol.  Not once.
  • I think some people may try, but you can gently correct them and they probably wont do it again.  Most people will follow what you call her though.
  • I really don't think so....to me they seem like very different names. Someone would have to be really really wanting to nickname that child if they were to call her Carol. Caroline is a gorgeous name and I'd like to use it however we have a close relative who named their daughter that.
  • No...I don't think anyone would do that unless you started it.  I love the name Caroline!

  • No, I don't think anyone would intentionlly use the wrong name.  Carol isn't really a NM for that so I woudl not worry about that.

  • I wouldn't call a Caroline "Carol."  Not a chance.  One of my friends goes by Karly and that's the most common nn I've heard for Caroline/Karolyn etc.
  • I know a Caroline but that is how she introduces herself, and therefor, that is what she is called. At most she is a "Care"
  • I doubt it. I would def. use it- I love Caroline, I'm actually considering Cara, which is a shorter version, you could use that for a nickname!
