Pregnant after 35

Don't really understand my NT results

First off, I only have half of the results- I did the ultrasound today. The doc said, "When was your last period because this isn't adding up." I told him I knew it to be true because I was tracking it online since we were trying to get pregnant. Anyway, he said, "It looks like you are 13 weeks along- not 11 and a half- from the size of the baby." He told me that the measurement was 2.2. He said he'd be concerned if I were 11 weeks but since the baby seems more like 13 weeks, he is not concerned and it's within the normal range. Well all it did was scare me. I guess being 40 has me super-freaked out. So I asked if we should do a CVS and he said that we should wait until next week when the blood results come back. If I am truly 13 weeks, that would put me at 14 then which would mean it's too late for a CVS, no?

I am just so confused. He did see a nasal bone so he said that looked good.

Am I stressing myself out for no reason? I feel so sick and sad and I am not sure if I should be feeling that way. All of this is so confusing. I did ask if we should do a CVS today and he just didn't seem interested in that idea so maybe I am working myself up over nothing?

Re: Don't really understand my NT results

  • Hey- try not to worry.   i know that's FAR easier said than done, but really - sometimes the dates just *don't* add up.   You could have ovulated late, or early, or or or... you know?     You'll get a set of numbers when you have the results of the blood test that give you total risk results.   Until that happens, try to trust your doc since he said he's not concerned.

I KNOW this feeling... I do.   I had lousy results and had to wait for further info and i made myself crazy - but you DIDN'T get lousy results.   Just a little confusing- but within normal range.   :)

    Thinking of you!

  • Thanks so much Christine. I appreciate your response.
  • As I understand it, anything under 3 is good, so even if your baby is growing fast, or the dates are off, Christine is right, you are still within normal range. I know it's hard to shake off the fear but try not to stress yourself too much.

This is a chart that shows that the risk is very low with a measurement of 2.2.  My measurement was 3.6 (from the tech) and 3.8 (from the doctor).  That equates to a 1 in 3 risk, but 2.2 is much much lower risk.

  • Thanks ladies-- I really appreciate your words of wisdom Smile
  • Correct about the CVS, they don't do them once you reach 13 wks.  I had one and they rushed me in because I was on my last day of 12 wks.

It's such a "guessing game" with the u/s measurements and blood work that it needlessly freaks people out a lot.  My u/s measurement came out good, my blood work looked "okay" then when my age (38) was tossed into the mix it gave me a 1 in 8 chance of Downs and a 1 in 110 chance of Trisomy 18.  We had the CVS done and she's perfectly healthy.

Good luck and try (easier said than done I know) not to worry too much.  Keep us updated please.

  • Yes,  on the blood work front, I should also mention that after my blood work up - I had a result of 1 in 44 for Trisomy, and nearly died on the spot.   After 2 weeks of crying and panicking - the amnio showed she was PERFECTLY healthy.  (and a girl, which ruined our idea of calling her Nathan... ahem.)

... not to mention - *should* you get a result you're not happy with, god forbid?  REALLY do the numbers.   1 in 44 sounded like a death sentence to me, when, in fact, there was more than a 97% chance that she was totally fine, which she was :)

Hang in there and keep us posted??
