I have a little boy Owen. Whenever I tell people I like the name Declan if we have another boy- I get strange looks- or people love it- very mixed reactions.
I have a friend who named her son this. She pronounces it "da-clan". At first I wasn't sure about the name but it definitely suites this little boy. The name in general has definitely grown on me.
I guess I'm in the minority but I love the name Declan. It may not be very popular here but in the UK, it's quite popular and I met several men with that name.
3 IUI's and 2 IVF's later- Brady arrived. Born at 36 weeks after PUPPS and pre-e/HELLP.
IUI- BFN IVF #1 -BFP! Allie is our 2nd IVF baby. Born at 36 1/2 weeks after pre-e again
I L-O-V-E the name Declan.... but maybe I'm biased because that's what we named our son. To those who don't know, it's pronounced "DECK-lyn". It's an old Irish name. St. Declan was a buddy of St. Patrick's. And it's also Elvis Costello's real first name. It's a very well known name in Ireland & is just starting to become known here. IMO it's what Conor, Liam and Adian were 30 years ago.
If you have an Irish last name (or want to pay homage to your Irish ancestory) it'll work well, but if you have no ties to Ireland I wouldn't use it.

Are you sure that's how she pronounces it? Because that's not right at all. Is she purposely pronouncing it differently?
This is my #1 choice right now for a boy- go for it! In a strange way I'm sort of happy that not everyone liked it- maybe it wont get too popular (like all the other names I like keep doing!)
I also love how people think it sounds 'made up' yet it is a very traditional Irish name. Just cause you don't know it doesn't mean it isn't a real name.

I love the name Declan. It's a great Irish name. A lot of people don't know how to pronounce it, which doesn't bother me, because if you like it, screw what other people think.?
I opened this post thinking "I'm going to respond I don't like that name", but after reading all of the responses (and how to pronounce it), I'm really liking this name!!
I've been hearing this name more and more recently (and it has been listed on this board numerous times in the past few weeks). Also, as you can tell people in this post are saying that they know of babies being named this so it appears to be catching some popularity (but no probably won't be super popular). I usually like Irish names but this one I'm not a fan of, sorry.
Re: Thoughts on the name Declan
Declan is NMS, at all. Like a PP said, I prefer Deacon better. How about Owen & Dean? Thos two names sound nice together. Good luck!

I love it! I love a lot of Irish names. My maiden name is Irish and I miss it!
Unfortunately most of them sound weird w/ our very long Swedish last name that ends in -berg
That's my "boy" name! I'm actually a little sad that I'll likely never get to use it. And I can't come up with another girl name for the life of me!
I love it!

I have to agree... I like Owen & Dean

I also like Oliver for a sibling to Owen.?
I read it as ***-lan
not a fan.
