Any one having trouble giving up the dieting mentality

This might be a really weird question, but I have a hard time keeping my weight in check even with daily exercising... so my choices lean towards low fat/ low calorie.  It has made me cringe to use real sugar instead of my Equal since I have found out and eating lunch today, I wondered about why bothering using my fat free dressing.  I went to the grocery store this weekend and didn't know what to get when I couldn't get my fat free yogurt (it also has aspartame).  This is a bigger switch than giving up certain foods for me.  Just wondering if I am the only one thinking this.  Also I haven't felt great to do my full workout at the gym.  I even skipped today, I almost never skip.

  • I'd been working on losing weight for a while pre-bfp.  I highly recommend you check out babyfit.com and see what kinds of meals they recommend for you and maybe even try tracking for a while.  It's hard to switch from eating to lose weight to healthy pregnancy eating and I found that tracking for a little while really helped me to see where I was and where I needed to be.  I'm actually tracking again to make sure that I'm getting enough protein per the recommendation of my Bradley Method instructor.

  • Nope, I still try to eat healthy, but I am not worried about dieting.  I know my baby needs me to eat some fat for it and I am happy to do it!

  • You don't have to give up the low fat entirely.  In fact, one of the best ways to prevent GD is by sticking to low fat foods (although I would stay far away from artificial sweetners).

If these are the kinds of foods that you enjoy, keep eating it but just make sure you are getting enough calories in your day.  Maybe instead of the fat free yogurt, you can try pudding? Pudding is low in calories but most do not use aspartame.

  • just don't eat a bunch of crap.

  • This isn't the time to diet, nor is it time to completely throw out the progress you've already created for yourself. Why not eat plain yogurt, which doesn't have any sweeteners, and add fresh (or frozen) fruit to it?

Honestly, when I was pg with DD, I didn't eat any differently other than cutting out coffee to no more than 1 cup a day. I didn't give up any foods either since I didn't eat poorly before I got pg. I didn't "eat for two", and I didn't change anything else. I gained 32 lb, which I ended up losing about 3 months after she was born w/o doing anything different.

Having a diet soda (which contains aspartame or other sweeteners) a day isn't going to hurt you. Neither will having a "light" yogurt either. I only eat light yogurt.

    Hope this helps you out.

  • After reading "In Defense of Food" I totally cut out artificial sweeteners and any processed low fat foods. It was hard to quit Splenda and low fat yogurt but now I only eat raw brown sugar, full fat local yogurt and butter, no more frozen meals. I haven't gained ANY weight and I feel better and more full (in a GOOD way) after I eat. Don't be afraid! Real food is better for you and easier for your body to break down, we have just been conditioned by advertisers to believe otherwise!?
  • I am bothered a bit by how conscience I am about what I am eating and I do get annoyed with myself if I have a pastry or something high in fat...but I don't get to hard on myself because hontesly a pastry or some junky high in fat thing does little good for the baby...I just try and eat really healthy...with my m/s nothing really sounds good except for fruit...so I have a fruit smoothy in the morning...which i calculated is like 550 calories and then I have an apple and yogurt and a pb&j for lunch and some cottage cheese w/pineapple in it....I have reset my calorie counter on my iphone to how many calories I should have in 1 day and I do monitor that I if that pastry is going to put me over the edge significantly then I either decide to work out that night or don't eat it...I think it is still a good idea to be conscience of what you are eating...on the weekends I don't use the calorie counter and I know eat a lot more so it probably all evens out in the end!
  • It is a really weird switch - from someone that has monitored their eating habits for almost 20+ years, it's hard to 'allow' yourself foods that were once big no-no's.

I agree with what the previous poster said about eating unprocessed foods; things like real fats and real sugar are okay in moderation, and in some cases, good for the baby. Eating the yolks of eggs (I've been a strictly egg-white gal for 5+ years) feels weird, but the fat and cholestrol is good for brain development of the fetus.

Just take it slow. I've found now that I'm at 12 weeks, it's REALLY easy to pick real foods over processed ones. It'll be hard to go back after delivery.

  • I got over it the night that I was up to eat for the 3rd time, sobbing away in the kitchen, and DH came in, looked me in the eyes, and said:

    "You have GOT to EAT."

And then made me a big bowl of soup. ?From then on, and it was about 4 weeks ago, I've been much better about eating. ?I still watch what I'm eating, nutrition-wise, but I focus on veggies and protein more than the calories.?
