Switching from similac soy to whole milk

We have a few months before we switch DS to whole milk, but I was wondering what others experience has been switching from a soy baased formula to whole milk. Did DC have any problems with it?

DS was switched to soy based formula when he was 3 weeks old, partly due to some digestion issues but mainly because he had a mommy who overreacted to everything. I can admit that now that he is older, but when i was in the moment, no one could tell me that I was overreacting.

Well I talked with pedi about this concern at DS 4 month appt, and she did not advise me  to switch him to regualr formula becuase he was getting ready to start solids. She said that she has seen many kids who were on soy based formula do well on whole milk. I am going to bring it up again at his 9 month appt, but I just wanted to get others experiences with this.

Thanks.

Re: Switching from similac soy to whole milk

  • My step daughter had to go from soy formula to 2%! The dr. said it wasn't good for her to drink whole milk that b/c she was on soy for so long that whole milk had to much fat in it!

  • We weaned to Costco soymilk. It is SO much cheaper then cows milk and does not need to be refrigerated until opened. You can buy cases at a time. It is in the same aisle as the juice.
  • If its any consolation, my DS was on Alimentum from 8 weeks old until a year old because he had an allergy to cow's milk protein, which showed up as blood in his poop.  When I started whole milk, he did just fine.
  • My niece was on similac soy from about 3 months(when SIL stopped BF) and she did fine on whole milk.

  • my ds was on lactose free formula (Similac Sensitive), we put him on lactose free milk.

once he's on solids, (by the 9 mo. appt), can't you switch to a lactose free formula?  Then you can see if he can handle that and switch to lactose free milk.

My friend's dd was on alimentum (sp?) and her dd reacted to milk so she's on soy milk.

you can do soy milk w/ no problem

  • DD was on similac soy since 3 weeks.  Around 9 months the pedi advised us to slowly transition DD to the regular similac before beginning whole milk.  This way her stomach can gradually get used to milk before starting cows milk.  We started by putting 8 oz of similac soy to 1 oz regular similac, then gradually decreased the amount of soy and increased the amount of regular.  Now we are completely on regular and she is doing really well with it.  We plan to start cows milk the beginning of March.
  • our allergist told us most babies with cow's milk protein sensitivity don't outgrow it til 18 months at least.   because DD had classic symptoms (i.e., blood in stool) we used soy formula and then switched to soy milk.  we use the silk soy milk, which the pedi said is equivalent to whole milk.  we give her regular cheese, butter, and yogurt though, and she seems to tolerate these ok.

  • DD has been on soy since she was about 3 weeks old. She had reflux and other issues. She tolerates cheese and yogurt fine. She always has so my Pedi wanted me to try her on whole milk at a year old. That was ok for a week and then she would get horrible diaper rash. We then went 2% it too was fine for a week and then the rash came back. We ended up giving soy (SILK). She is now 18 mths. Doing fine on it! GL :)
