This is the first time I have dealt with a vomiting toddler and I just feel so bad for him!!!! He has thrown up 7 times today and wants to eat but just can't keep anything down.
What do you do that makes things easier on them? Any tips would be really appreciated.
Also, I have not called the doc because I figure there is nothing they can do, but is there a point that I should if he doesn't get better?
I'm feeling a little overwhelmed....
Re: HELP! Toddler first time w/stomach bug
Don't let him eat any solid food or gulp any fluids until he vomit free for 12hrs (I think) and then start slowly again-small bites of bland food or clear liquids, jello, broth etc. We called the nurse for advice and she just said to give DD a teaspoon of water every 10 min to keep her hydrated. It's so small, that it gets absorbed and won't cause her to vomit. You can also try teaspoons of pedialyte if he will drink it. The only way we got dd to drink that was to make it into a slushy and give her teaspoons. We just layed her on a bunch of towels on the couch and when she started crying we knew she was about to puke so we would have her puke into a towel because she didn't get the whole puking in a bucket thing. I felt like I was burping her again holding up the towel almost like a burp cloth! Good luck!
Call the doc if the vomiting gets so severe he can't keep anything down and you find it lasting longer than a day.
My DS didn't have the stomach bug until he was almost 2 so I felt totally clueless, too.
Give him *small* sips of water and/or Pedialyte. (I made the mistake of letting my son drink a cup of Pedialyte quickly and it came right back up.)
Hang in there. I'd call the Ped as soon as you want to. If nothing else, they'll make a note of it and reassure you everything is okay.
My DS just got over a stomach bug...well, he didn't throw up 7 times, but he did throw up once a day for three days straight and then a random day through the week. Let your DS sip water...don't let him chug it down. You just want to keep him hydrated. Also, try saltine crackers for him to eat. Those are always pretty easy on the stomach. Good Luck!
