Sydney-Melbourne is a quick flight - I think about an hour. I think Sydney to Brisbane is about the same. Haven't driven between either one, but I'd say 5-6 hours drive??
Brisbane will be the warmest - great beaches nearby, good surfing. Head a little south and check out Byron Bay. You can head a little north to get to the great barrier reef for some amazing diving/snorkeling.
Sydney is very cosmopolitan, lots of history. Check out the harbor bridge, the opera house, The Rocks area. Great nightlife if you're into that. The tower is neat - amazing view. There's also a nice zoo with great views of the harbor, and Bondi and Manly beaches are nice (if it's warm). Head a little west to the Blue Mountains for a nice scenic drive. There's a Zig Zag railway and the Katoomba railway (funicular) which are both cool.
Melbourne's where I met DH. There's wine tasting nearby and you should rent a car and drive down to the Great Ocean Road for some amazing scenery.
Sydney and Melbourne both have museums, theaters, fine dining and shopping galore. Oh and check out a cricket match (just a one-day match) - very cool game and some Aussie rules football.

This really makes me want to go back!
We will be gone for a total of 14 days. I'm really excited, but it's "bittersweet excitement", since Preston is staying home with Grammy & Grampy.
Thank you for all the suggestions. I will definitely print this and check out these activities. Yes, we are into the nightlife and just from looking on line at the tourist sites, I got the idea that was what Sydney was like.

Any different food dishes that we should try out?
