I'm training to run my first 5k in a few weeks. I used to be an avid runner, but having two kids has taken a toll on my body. I have had problems with a bone spur in my foot, so I've had to take it easy for the past month and a half. I finally ran again on Sunday. I went slow and took it easy. My bone spur started hurting again and now my knee makes a popping sound when I straighten my leg. It also hurts. That's kind of normal for me, though, since I developed tendonitis as a teenager from ballet. The popping sound is new, though. I'm going to call my doctor, but I wanted to see if any of you have experience with this. Is my running career over?
Re: Popping sound in my knee???? Help!
I used to be an avid runner also..2 kids and shin splints ruined me.
But generally everytime I restarted running..I would get the popping in my knee. It feels like a tendon is just running over.
Check your form..lay off and stretch for a few days. Than...if you are experiencing pain while running you might want to get professionally fitted for shoes. They can also tell you what might be wrong with your form.
On a sort of side note:..Have you heard of ChiRunning? Supposedly its supposed to help you have perfect form. I am ordering the book from the library but it was recommended to me because I am still struggling with shin splints even with professionally fitted shoes (I pronate badly, so I know its a foot mechanism problem with me)
I also pronate badly! I have been fitted for shoes, so that's been taken care of. I'm wondering if running on a treadmill is the issue. I hate running on treadmills because I'm prone to clumsiness and I almost always trip during my workout. I can't run outside in the winter because of asthma. Maybe it's the treadmill! You've given me a great idea. I get so stressed on the treadmill because I feel like I'm going to fall. I think I may try to find an indoor track.
I have not heard of Chi running. I will definitely look into it.
Thanks for the reply!
I run with terrible form on a treadmill..could totally be that.
Also..I thought of something else. If your spur is bothering you..or possibly you are overcompensating for it in your form...that could put extra strain on your knee and make it hurt like that also.
Good Luck! I am so depressed I can't even run a mile yet. =( I really want to run like I used to..its my goal this spring. I loved running I want to be able to run again 3 miles at least.
I guess it could also be the spur. It's in my left foot and my right knee is the one that is injured. I may be running especially hard on my right leg to make up for the pain in my foot.
Thanks again for the info!
