Regular backpack for diaper bag?

Ladies--

Would a backpack with lots and lots of pockets and dividers (adding a changing pad, small zippered bags, maybe a small soft-side insulated cooler if needed, etc.)--work okay/well for a diaper bag? 

I am really not a large purse/bag carrier and would like to get something that can be used beyond the baby years and by my husband, too.  I've don't have children and have never traveled with anyone else's baby, so I have no clue.  I figured you ladies have some experience and could tell me what is really necessary and what isn't.  

Also, I've looked at some diaper bag backpacks, and, for some reason, they are made for tiny women.  They were all certainly too small for my husband and were uncomfortable for me as well (broad shoulders).  We are planning on getting a small regular diaper bag for shorter trips.

I used a regular backpack for my fist DD. You will need to choose the right one (with lots of compartments, as you described), but there is no reason it can't work! We enjoyed our backpack and now use it for all kinds of things. DH was also happier to carry it. Make sure the main compartment opens up really wide so that you can get right to the bottom.

I use a regular backpack sometimes - works great.
