Reusing bottles for next child?

My friend's sister is on her third child and has used the same bottles for all 3! I'll admit I can appreciate the thought process because I hate thinking about just tossing all of DD's perfectly good bottles away. Would you do this?

ETA: Would your opinion change if you were waiting say 3-4 years in between kids?

Re: Reusing bottles for next child?

  • I'd probably reuse bottles if they looked OK, but would definitely replace nipples.

  • i plan to.  i will be buying new nipples, though.
  • Jude didn't take bottles, but he used them a handful of times, so I saved them.  I just tossed the nipples and will re-sterilize the bottles.
  • That's the plan for us.
  • no I can't remember the cut off date but there is an expiration date for bottles. Yes I also will hate to throw away good bottles but to store for a year or two doesn't make sense to me because parts will get brittle and who is to say the next baby will even like that particulat bottle.

  • Sure. We use the playtex drop-ins and I gave all the small 4 oz bottles (minus the nipples) for her to use...she'll be having her baby anytime now within the next couple of weeks. If I have another one, I am sure she would hand them back for me to use again.
  • Yup... in fact, I am using Avent bottles that were used by my niece and my nephew.

Who cares, as long as they are in good condition.

  • We use drop-ins, and we plan on using them for all our children. We know we will have at least 1 more.

I will just buy new nipples for each child. I don't see the purpose of throwing out perfectly good bottles. My SIL did this, and I have no idea why. You could try to sell them rather than throw them out.

I would guess that they can probably be recycled as well.

  • There is no way I am throwing away my perfectly good BPA-free Avent bottles that cost a fortune!  I will buy new nipples.
  • Yup - I have already packed away the 4 ounce ones. I use the drop ins. I will just buy new nipples.

  • We will reuse ours if that time should ever come. We only use the Evenflo glass bottles, so I feel okay using them again. We will just buy new nipples for them.
  • If we were having another child, I would probably save our glass bottles, but toss the plastic ones.

I can't find any info on expiration dates for bottles. I also can't see bottles getting brittle after a year or two. The family I just worked for used Playtex Drop-ins that were the old primary colors (manufactured in 1998, etc) and they worked fine.

As long as you replace nipples, then you should be fine.

  • I do, but I use a disposable system.  So, we used the same shell for #1 and #2....and will for #3.  But, I buy new nipples.  Usually, by a year, the nipple has seen better days anyway, so it's time to toss it!
  • I would reuse mine if we were having more kids, but since we're not I plan on giving mine away to a sister or whoever else wants them. I just use the Evenflo glass bottles so I see no reason why they couldn't be used by multiple children.?
  • I have a few different brands, but will keep all of them for our next.  I'll see which one they like - it may differ from DD.  But I'll get new nipples

    Ditto this exactly. :)

  • I have a million types of bottles bc DD #1 only took MAM bottles and DD#2 only took Soothie bottles...sooo we have a LOT to choose from...I will be rusing mine.
