Can KY jelly substitute for ultrasound gel?

DH and I are taking a vacation to Florida for the next 10 days and we have run out of ultrasound gel for our home doppler.  I ordered more last week but it has yet to arrive.  I heard KY jelly works as a substitute.  Is this true?  Can it damage your doppler (we use a rental and so I don't want to break it)?

  • i asked my doctor where i could by ultrasound gel, and she said that regular lotion would be fine...so i would guess that ky is also fine.
  • I use regular lotion and it works great.  As an added bonus I just rub it in when I'm done, rather than mop up the mess.

  • I ran out and I asked my OB. He suggested a medical supply store but he told me it would be cheaper to get regular KY jelly. So I say go for it.
