thermometers

So I don't take DD's temperature much. . . I'm pretty good at telling how hot she is (I actually read somewhere that mothers are very accurate when reporting their kids temperature by just touching their lips to the child's forehead).

Anyway, she was reported to have 103 (under the arm) at daycare today and then threw up once after they took her temperature, so obviously, she came home for the day.

I gave her Tylenol and she got cooler, so she went down for a long and much needed nap.

She was really hot again when she woke up, so I wanted to take her temp.  She FREAKED out.  She's never liked having her temperature taken, but it was serious freaking (I was taking it under her arm).  She freaked out so much that she threw up again.

I honestly don't think she has a stomach virus, the puking was just from the freaking out.

So long story, short question. . . what would be a good and FAST thermometer. . . something that doesn't take forever to register.  I know the ear ones aren't that accurate, but honestly, I'd take a ballpark if it would keep her from being hysterical.

Re: thermometers

  • Maybe try one of those ones that reads it off the forehead?  I'm not sure how accurate they are though.  I have also seen underarm/rectal ones that take the temp in a matter of seconds (5 or 8).  That might work?  Those were not expensive, under $10 when I saw them at walmart.

  • I would try the forehead one or the ones that glue to the body.  G freaks out too.  it's horrible.

  • I have one of those plastic strips that you place on the forehead, the different bars become colored depending on the temp, like a mood ring. I use it when I just need a general idea, not an exact temp. If that thing registers a fever, then sometimes I'll push it further with a real thermometer.

DS has started to freak about having it taken under the arm, too, which I just can't understand. It doesn't hurt at all - he won't tell me what's so upsetting about it.

ETA: the forehead strip is really fast, too, like 5 seconds, which is about his pateince level for having it on his head before he wants to take mine.

  • I think if you want a ballpark figure then go for an ear thermometer. That's what I use

  • The ear one isn't great until they are older because they don't fit into small ears. We just got a temporal forehead one. You literally press a button and slide it across the forehead, so you can even do it in their sleep. It takes about 2-3 seconds maybe? It seems pretty accurate to me so far.
  • Oh, and I forgot to add-if she freaks out, then she would probably really freak out with the ear one. If you go near DS's ears he squirms like crazy. Also if they have an earache and you ever try to take their temp, it would be a nightmare. ?That is why we went with the forehead one.
  • I got a temporal one too and tested it a million times along with the regular one and it comes pretty close. It's a quick, non-invasive swipe. Mia deals with that much better than the minute long underarm.

    Hope she's feeling better soon!
