Adoption

question

Question:

I applied to a local agency that has a good reputation, but I have not heard if we are qualified to work with them or not?  We got a confirmation email that they recd our application on 1/13, so it?s only been a week. How long did you wait to see if you qualify to work with a local agency?  We also recd an informational packet in the mail, so that was a good sign. I guess I?m already nervousJ

After 7 years of marriage and 5 unsuccessful IVFs, we have been granted the gift of adopting a baby boy, born 4/21/11.

Re: question

  • With our agency we had to obtain a waiver from their board of directors for their length of marriage requirement. It took us about 3 weeks to complete a one page letter to them (in one page we had to tell them who we were, why we wanted to adopt, why they should waive their requirement, etc - it was hard to get everything into one page - I probably obsessed too much). It then took them 2 weeks to review our information and congratulate us to the agency.

If we had not needed to get the waiver, I'm not sure there was an official 'congrats you've been accepted' process. Though we did have to turn in a general form about us and an exhaustive questionnaire - it wasn't evident to me that we would have been turned down unless we weren't able to financially afford their program.

I would give it one more week and then send an email or call. We were immediately assigned, once we were 'approved', a caseworker and an adoptive parent specialist.

    Good luck!

  • We only knew because we received additional paperwork in the mail. It took a couple of weeks. We were told that if we didn't qualify or whatever they would have let us know. I think it's relatively quick for them to determine if someone isn't going to qualify.

    Good thoughts are with you!
