Pack N Play

Does anyone use a pack n play instead of a regular bassinett?  I know someone had mentioned in a previous post of mine that they use a pack n play with bassinett/changing table as a place for the baby to sleep for the first 3 or 4 months.  I was just going to use the crib right from the start.

Is it more convenient for first time parents to have the baby sleep in the same room for the first few months?

We are trying to go the most cost effective route with keeping our baby's safety, comfort, etc. in mind.  I don't want to throw away money on an item that I will only be using for a short period of time.  I'm looking to purchase items that we can be used until at least the baby is a year old or a two-in-one or three-in-one kind of thing so we will be able to get more use out of it. Then as the baby gets older we'll readjust.

I hope this makes sense.  Thanks in advance for your help and advice.

Re: Pack N Play

  • Our bedroom is upstairs from the baby's so we kept her up there until about 6 weeks, while I was bf'ing, and when she didnt sleep through the night yet.  We never had a bassinet...thought it would be a waste.  We do however, use out PNP when we go to hotels or to someones house where they dont have one or a crib.  We travel alot, to water park hotels, weekend trips, etc so it was worth every penny for us to have one.  DD  just turned 2 and still uses it

  • I think you can do whatever works for you guys. The pack n play is multi-functional so you can use it as a bassinet for a few weeks until the baby starts sleeping better at night and then transition to the crib. My stepmom gave us a bassinet, otherwise we would just use the pack n play for a few weeks.
  • I am planning on putting my baby immediately in her crib. We are not getting a bassinet. Her room is right next to ours, plus I will need to go into her room to nurse her (that's where the glider will be). ?If you want a cheap pack and play, then check out Craigslist.

  • We will be using the pack n play for the first month or so...and then moving her into her crib. Her room is in the front of the house and ours is in the back...
  • I was going to use the PnP as an alternate sleeping location when we are downstairs, away from Sam's room.  I don't want to have to go up and down the stairs during the day.  In the evenings, he will be put into his crib.  We will also use the PnP when we are away from the house for visits, OOT trips, etc.
  • I didn't have a PnP for my DD and then got one as a gift when I was pg with DS - I love it and wish to God I'd had it the first time around!  We used it as a bassinet at first, then to keep him contained so I could shower, etc.  They also fold up easily and quickly, so they are great to take along if you are going to spend an afternoon at someone's house and you know the baby is going to need a nap.  And they are fairly roomy, so even a 18mo old can use it for a nap.  I would rather give up just about any other large baby accessory than my PnP.

Also, keep in mind, if your baby is going to be going to daycare or a sitter's house regularly, they are probably going to require you to bring a PnP.

  • We didn't even buy a crib until she was 3 mos old :)
