Tell me about your dc's transition to milk...

I am thinking of starting Aidan with whole milk soon.  He has not shown adverse reaction to milk and milk products used the the food he is eating, does great with yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese and other milk products and I think with think with the amount of milk I drink (usually a half gallon a day) he would have had some sort of adverse reaction by now.

Did any of you start the transition to milk before the one year mark?  If you were bfing exclusively before at what pace did you wean?  I've done some reading, but I'd like to hear how it actually went for you rather than the text book way it 'should' go.

  • Prior to starting milk, Jackson was on formula and took 3 bottles/day (mid am, mid pm, bedtime).

11 months - replaced mid pm bottle with milk sippy

11.5 months - replaced mid am bottle with milk sippy

12 months - eliminated bedtime bottle; moved milk sippys to coincide with mealtimes and added in extra sippy of water for snacks and to have throughout the day

It was a very smooth transition for us and he took to it very well.

  • we are in the process.  Luca was bottle fed so we got rid of that first..  He now gets 4 sippy cups a day...  Morning, AM snack, PM stack, and bed..  We are about to drop the bedtime one.  He really doesn't drink much anyway..  Right now we are doing 1/2 milk 1/2 formula...  The way we ditched the bottles was to replace one at a time with a cup..  We did the bedtime one last...  I would say just replace a nursing session with a cup of 1/2 milk and 1/2 BM...
  • It's been easier than I thought - I started giving her a sippy cup with a meal or two a day around 10 months and I just kept offering it more while not offering the boob as much. By mid 11th month we were down to nursing 2x a day - morning and night. We dropped to once a day at 12 months and stopped for good (hopefully) yesterday! (she turned 1 on Jan 4th)

She doesn't always get a full 16-24 oz a day (my pedi's rec) but she eats a very well rounded diet and also loves yogurt and some cheeses (only the stinky ones - go figure). Good luck!

  • At about 11 months and one week, we just switched him. Dropped formula cold turkey. It went pretty smooth, though he had strep throat at thet time (unbeknownst to me). So, he was not drinking much at first, but it was because his throat hurt.

We gradually introduced sippy cups starting at 11 months. On his 1st birthday, I boxed up all bottles. He has been solely on sippy cups ever since.

  • Thanks for the posts!  Aidan has been off bottles since six months; I'm hoping that will help with the transition.  I'm going to buy milk tomorrow so I'll let you know how it goes!
  • Eloise was BF'd and pretty much never took a bottle after she started solids. I introduced a sippy cup with water at meals at 6mo.

I introduced milk around 11mo and she liked it right away. I did not use it to replace nursing though, pretty much I was just replacing the water she was drinking at meals and I gave it to her at snack time as well. I did not even start to cut back on nursing until 14mo and she was weaned at 16.5mo.
