WDYT about CIO DURING the night?

My great sleeper got sick last week & because I was going in every 10mins to settle her from coughing, I ended up just sleeping in the spare bed in her room. Well, after 2 nights I realised she's now crying more because she wants ME not because she's coughing. So, at 5am this morning, we were basically doing CIO & I kept questioning myself on whether it's an only-at-bedtime thing, and not meant for middle of the night wakings. Even though I could tell she was OK, not really that sick. Wow, rambling.

WDYT? Should I be settling her? At what point do you say, OK, she's not sick, she'll have to cry this out?

Re: WDYT about CIO DURING the night?

  • I listen for what type of cry it is and for how long. if it's nothing, I let him fall back asleep on his own.
  • I'm just marking this so I can come back later.  I hope someone has some suggestions for you.  My 10 month old goes to bed great on her own but all of a sudden this week she's been waking up and crying.  When I pick her up she falls right asleep on my shoulder but if I leave her in her crib she cries and cries.  I don't know how to handle middle of the night CIO either!

  • I know coughing is what wakes my DD initially, but she settles back down as soon as I enter the room. The crying starts when I try to walk out, which is how I know it's now about ME, not the coughing!
  • Once we got naptime and bedtime down without problems we have moved onto middle of the night.  For months Sydney was getting up every 2 hours and needing me to rock her back to sleep - we were all miserable in our house.

Once I checked on her and made sure she was fine, I let her CIO.  It is a PITA in our house since the girls share a room.  Sydney woke Riley up a few times and I just went in and let them know that they needed to sleep.  The first few nights were rough, but it has worked out with us.  Sydney still wakes up once a night and I give her a bottle and most days she is back asleep until 6:30 / 7.  I know she shouldn't still be getting a bottle in the middle of the night, but we will work on that soon.

I think once you check on her and make sure she is fine.  Try to calm her as best as you can and then leave.  It took about 3 or 4 nights and its been much better for us - hopefully you will have same or better success.

    Ditto

  • If it was in the middle of the night, then yes, I would do CIO. I did that with both kids and I only had to let the CIO a couple of times in the middle of the night. ALthough, I do not think 5am is the middle of the night.
  • DD was doing this for awhile and we had to do CIO. I don't think there's anything bad about CIO in the middle of the night versus the beginning. Is she still sick with the coughing? When DD is sick, I'm much more lenient and will get up quicker and sometimes she and I sleep together in the guest room. So far, she has never gotten stuck in bad habits and once she's better she will go back to STTN in her crib. Also ditto sweetie that I listen for what type of cry it is. If it's particularly loud or like something is wrong then I still go in there right away.
