Anyone dealt with Small babies? Specifically IUGR? Our baby dipped from 15% to 8% at our 26 week growth scan. Feeling incredibly guilty and sad about this. She is perfect in every way except her size and trying to focus on how healthy and perfect she is but very freaked out about giving birth early or to a tiny tiny baby.
Re: SGA or IUGR
My 1st baby measured 10% at 20 weeks, then 13% at 22 or 23 weeks. They checked the blood flow, cord, and heart. I developed pre-eclampsia and to everyone's surprise she was born at 5% at 38 weeks. No nicu stay, and no issues with blood sugar, but she was thin. She's 5 now and she is still very petite but is on a proper growth curve and it seems to be the way she naturally is built. Perhaps the pre-eclampsia had affected her growth. No one told me what they think happened, but if it was related to the placenta, it's good that I was induced as soon as they caught pre-eclampsia.
My advice is to keep advocating for scans, NSTs, or other forms of care and asking what their plan is to keep you and baby in the best health possible. Asking frequently will help them not forget either. Do not worry about annoying them or if they roll their eyes because you express concern for your baby at every appointment and ask the same questions even if you only get the same answers. You are mom to your voiceless child.
I had 2 babies after my first, in the 50th percentile at 20 weeks and in the 20th percentile at 20 weeks. Both did not get additional monitoring and came at 40 & 41 weeks in a healthy percentile (I don't remember how they compared at birth). My current baby measured at 13% at 22 weeks and my care team is not concerned about him being too small and doesn't think it's necessary to do another growth scan during pregnancy. It's hard not to worry but if I want to, I know that I can ask for NSTs or growth scans to make sure the same thing doesn't happen twice. I doubt my provider would say No to a request for a growth check. For now, I'm ok with him not being closely monitored but I've considered requesting another scan around 30-35 weeks for peace of mind.
